PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Diego Sanchez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and DJ Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sanchez comes into the arena with Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Diego Sanchez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, DJ Nelson!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed right hand from Sanchez misses the target.
Sanchez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Nelson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sanchez.
Nelson thows a body shot but no joy.
Diego Sanchez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nelson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Nelson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Sanchez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Sanchez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Sanchez cracks Nelson with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Sanchez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nelson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nelson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Sanchez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Nelson scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

and Nelson counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Sanchez throws out a loose jab but Nelson uses good head movement to avoid it.
Nelson is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Sanchez rather than just go for the knockout.

DJ Nelson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Nelson wants the takedown. Sanchez is fighting it off but Nelson persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Sanchez's guard against the cage.

Nelson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Nelson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Nelson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Sanchez is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Nelson, into his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sanchez won't allow Nelson to sweep him here.

DJ Nelson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Nelson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
