PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jose Azevedo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Travis Mathews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mathews has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jose Azevedo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Travis Mathews!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Albert Achterberg and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Azevedo drops his shoulder and cracks Mathews with a huge uppercut! Mathews goes down! Can Azevedo finish him?


It looks like Travis Mathews has been cut.
Mathews looks gassed!

Azevedo drops back looking for a leg! Mathews is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mathews manages to kick Azevedo off! Azevedo jumps back into Mathews's guard.
Mathews keeping moving, preventing Azevedo from controlling successfully.
Azevedo is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mathews is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Azevedo pushes down on Mathews's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Azevedo is looking for a kimura here.

Azevedo seems to be working for a kimura but Mathews defends the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Azevedo wants to work for an arm triangle but Mathews is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Azevedo is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Azevedo passes to side control.

Azevedo is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mathews has escaped the position, nice work there.

Azevedo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mathews knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Azevedo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Azevedo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



A jab-cross combination lands for Azevedo and sends Mathews crashing to the mat! Azevedo follows him down to the mat - Mathews regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!
Azevedo is looking to take a break and control but Mathews is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Azevedo moves nicely into side control.
Azevedo tries to advance to mount but can't.
Mathews is breathing heavily.
Azevedo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mathews keeps working.

Azevedo is trying to get an arm triangle but Mathews is defending well.

Azevedo working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Azevedo could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Mathews is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Azevedo asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Azevedo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Mathews is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Mathews really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Azevedo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mathews is not content to let Azevedo control the position.
