PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Preston Schmidli (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimmy Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Schmidli kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Piano Man from Billy Joel. The key to victory for Preston Schmidli has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Preston Schmidli!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jimmy Joe!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Kenichi Hosakawa and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidli shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Joe shoots in but no luck this time.
Joe tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Schmidli paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Schmidli gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Joe goes for a takedown in the clinch but Schmidli prevents it.

Schmidli pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Schmidli lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Preston Schmidli seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Schmidli counters by clinching up.
Joe keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Schmidli's efforts to push away.

Joe wants the takedown. Schmidli is fighting it off but Joe persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Schmidli's guard against the cage.
Schmidli is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Joe is controlling him.

Joe might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Schmidli kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Schmidli is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Schmidli displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Joe.
Preston Schmidli has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jimmy Joe.

and Joe decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Schmidli's guard.
Schmidli knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Joe on the ground.

Joe stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Schmidli swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Schmidli manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Schmidli circles away from the clinch attempt
enabling Schmidli to counter with a crisp jab.
Schmidli throws a good cross that connects.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Preston Schmidli will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Schmidli jumps guard but Joe stands there with Schmidli around his waist. Schmidli gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Joe has Schmidli pressed against the cage, preventing Schmidli from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Schmidli manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Schmidli sneaks out the side door and pushes Joe away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Jimmy Joe comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Joe has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
