The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Penn has knee on belly and moves into mount. Penn content just to control the position here. Shotton is trying to escape the mount.

That's one minute gone in the round. Shotton tries to hold on but Penn pushes him away. Penn takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Penn punching from mount but Shotton doing a good job of avoiding damage. Penn sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Shotton takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Shotton looks gassed! Penn controlling his opponent.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Mick Penn just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Shotton misses with a takedown attempt and Penn counters with a takedown into side control. Shotton parries the strikes from Penn easily there. Penn is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Shotton to escape.

Penn remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Penn tries to move into full mount but can't pass Shotton's legs. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Shotton seems a little lost for a moment, as Penn dominates the positioning. Shotton prevents Penn from improving position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. A lull in the action here.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Penn accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Penn showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Mick Penn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Penn controlling the pace for now. Penn seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shotton for as long as he can get away with. Shotton takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Penn controlling from mount. Shotton's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Penn thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Shotton looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Shotton pushes Penn away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Penn gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Penn controlling from side mount. James Shotton has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Mick Penn is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Penn tries to advance to mount but Shotton denies him.
And that's the end of the fight! Mick Penn showed his dominance in that final round. Well Penn has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
