Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Raul Gonzalez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pete Jones! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gonzalez ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Gonzalez fails with the takedown. Jones misses with a looping right. Jones connects with a jab. Jones jabbing away but nothing is landing. Gonzalez takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Jones connects with a good right hand that stumbles Gonzalez. Gonzalez circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Jones tries a head kick but it misses.
Gonzalez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Jones throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Gonzalez shoots in for a takedown but Jones shows good takedown defense. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Raul Gonzalez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gonzalez on the wrong end of a nice hook. Jones is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range. Gonzalez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jones sprawls well. Jones wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gonzalez gets slowly back to his feet. Raul Gonzalez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gonzalez fails miserably with a takedown attempt. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gonzalez.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Gonzalez looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Pete Jones is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Good shot there by Jones. Jones lands with a straight right. Gonzalez didn't see that one coming. Jones connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Gonzalez momentarily.
Gonzalez gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Jones swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Jones might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable. Gonzalez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Jones avoids it really well and circles away. Jones misses with an uppercut. Gonzalez drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Jones lands a nice shot that snaps Gonzalez's head back.
This has been an exciting period of action! Jones thuds his right hand into Gonzalez's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Jones pivots, looking for a leg kick but Gonzalez is out of range and Jones settles back down.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jones clobbers Gonzalez with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Jones is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Jones is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round!Gonzalez had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. Jones throws a shot to the body.
Jones shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Jones with a hook. This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Gonzalez. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery. Gonzalez has a takedown stuffed. Gonzalez is breathing heavily. Jones slaps away a takedown attempt from Gonzalez, before circling back to the center of the mat. Jones scores with a hook to the body. Gonzalez takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Jones with a body punch. A glancing blow. Jones with a body punch. A glancing blow. Nice shot by Jones. Jones dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Jones scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Gonzalez on the wrong end of a nice hook. Gonzalez takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gonzalez walks straight into a right hand from Jones - that's dropped him! Jones jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Gonzalez from any more punishment! Gonzalez complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
