Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Rios! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Kibii Tergat! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Matheus Silva and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kibii Tergat shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rios napping and manages to drive through into side control! Rios is looking to reverse the position. Rios is trying to control Kibii Tergat's posture but Kibii Tergat avoids it. Kibii Tergat stands up and we're back to a striking position. Rios misses with a takedown attempt and Kibii Tergat counters with a nice double leg into side control. Rios won't be happy with that. Rios is trying to escape the position but Kibii Tergat is controlling the position. Kibii Tergat is looking to take a break and control but Rios is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Rios sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Rios looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Kibii Tergat controlling the action here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kibii Tergat is trying to control the action in half guard but Rios is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Kibii Tergat wants to get back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kibii Tergat is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Rios sees it coming and defends easily. Rios is looking to improve his position.
Rios moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Kibii Tergat looking to pass the guard. Kibii Tergat slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Kibii Tergat won't allow Rios to sweep him here. Kibii Tergat is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Rios throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Rios is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Kibii Tergat tries to free his leg and advance position but Rios is retaining full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Kibii Tergat got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rios has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kibii Tergat has managed to get both his arms back between Rios's legs - danger averted. Rios looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kibii Tergat is one step ahead there. Kibii Tergat drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kibii Tergat jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Kibii Tergat controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Kibii Tergat looking to pass the guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kibii Tergat wants to control from the top but Rios keeps moving. Rios looking for a guillotine here but Kibii Tergat defends easily.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Kibii Tergat gets a takedown into half guard. Kibii Tergat content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Rios looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kibii Tergat takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Kibii Tergat trying to control the action but Rios is working from the bottom. Kibii Tergat is controlling the pace.
Rios tries to roll over but Kibii Tergat keeps him under control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Paul Kibii Tergat dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Kibii Tergat drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Kibii Tergat trying to stand up but can't free himself from Rios's guard. Kibii Tergat wants to control from the top but Rios keeps moving. Rios is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Rios has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Kibii Tergat is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Rios. Kibii Tergat wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rios keeps working. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Kibii Tergat tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Rios wants to control but Kibii Tergat postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rios looking for a sweep but Kibii Tergat has passed into full mount! Oh no! Kibii Tergat lands a big elbow. Kibii Tergat controlling his opponent. Rios tries to hold on but Kibii Tergat postures up. Kibii Tergat is in the full mount, landing strikes. Kibii Tergat moves to back control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. I really don't envy Rios right now.
Kibii Tergat biding his time, controlling Rios. Rios staying busy and making it hard for Kibii Tergat to control. Rios is really stuck here.

Rios breaks Kibii Tergat's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Kibii Tergat is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rios defends well. Rios advances to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rios is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Paul Kibii Tergat has got the better of the ground game so far. Kibii Tergat trying to control here.
Rios looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Rios wants to work for an arm triangle but Kibii Tergat is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Kibii Tergat looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Rios in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Kibii Tergat tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Rios!
