PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sergio Puyol (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brandon Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Puyol comes to the cage accompanied by Enter Sandman- Metallica. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sergio Puyol!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brandon Silva!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Lou da Vinci and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva wants to clinch up but Puyol keeps it at a distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Silva looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Silva throws a wild body kick that Puyol sees coming a mile off.

Puyol fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Silva sprawls well initially but Puyol persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Puyol stops Silva from getting back to his feet.
Silva is looking to improve his position.
Puyol wants to pass to mount but Silva is defending the position.
Puyol is keen to just control but Silva is a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Silva avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Puyol.

Puyol is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The fighters are battling for position here. Silva manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Silva throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Silva wants to clinch up but Puyol keeps it at a distance.
Silva tries to land a front kick but Puyol steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
The fight stays on the outside here - Silva looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Puyol gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Silva trying to land knees to the body.
Puyol is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Silva lands a knee to the head.
Silva is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Puyol has hold of one of Silva's legs. Silva is fighting the takedown attempt but Puyol gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Silva is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Puyol slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Puyol might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Silva preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Puyol with a flurry of punches that miss.
Silva wants to sweep here but Puyol controlling him for the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Silva has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Puyol can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Puyol loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Puyol postures up in Silva's guard and throws a big left but Silva blocks it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Silva darts in trying to clinch

and Puyol counters with a shoot takedown. Silva fights it but they end up in guard.
Puyol working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Silva bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Puyol's guard.
Silva looking to sit in guard and control but Puyol gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Puyol trying to control the position from guard on top but Silva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Silva manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Puyol stops Silva from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.

Silva goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Puyol is on top in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Silva wants to sweep here but Puyol controlling him for the moment.
Puyol trying to control but Silva is working from the bottom.
Silva utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Puyol wants to control from the top but Silva keeps moving.

Puyol is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Silva is looking for a triangle but Puyol pushes his legs off easily.
Silva trying to control the position.

Silva looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sergio Puyol dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Silva tries to clinch but Puyol moves away

and Puyol counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Silva is on top in guard.

Puyol has his foot on Silva's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Silva works his way back into a safe position though.
Silva wants to pass the guard but Puyol is keeping the position.
Silva is pushing down on Puyol's leg trying to pass to half guard. Puyol is fighting to maintain full guard but Silva has managed to sneak the leg through.
Silva passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Puyol!

Sergio Puyol overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Puyol has given up his back. Will we see Silva going for some submissions?

Silva is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Silva doesn't have the hooks in and Puyol manages to turn into his guard.
Puyol trying to control but Silva is working from the bottom.
Puyol throwing strikes from guard but Silva blocks nicely.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Puyol trying to control the position from guard on top but Silva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Silva lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Puyol!
Poor strikes thrown by Silva there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Puyol manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Silva tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Silva has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Puyol is looking to reverse the position.
Silva looking to control but instead Puyol has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Silva tries to pass to full mount but Puyol defends it.
Silva trying to control from half guard but Puyol is working away.
Puyol tries to get to full guard but Silva has control of the leg.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Puyol is refusing to be controlled, as Silva sits in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Sergio Puyol will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!


Puyol avoids a punch combination nicely.
Silva tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Puyol counters with a nice double leg into side control. Silva won't be happy with that.

Puyol is trying to get an arm triangle but Silva is defending well.

Puyol is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Silva is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Silva is trying to get back to half guard.
Silva regains half guard.

Puyol is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Silva has managed to free his arm - good work.
Silva tries to get to full guard but Puyol has control of the leg.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Puyol is looking to take a break and control but Silva is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Puyol is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Silva is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Silva throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Puyol.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Silva fails with the takedown

and Puyol counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Puyol is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Silva wants to improve his position but Puyol is controlling well.
Puyol thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Silva's head.

Puyol is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Puyol wants to take a breather but Silva is having none of it.

Silva is looking for a sweep. Puyol is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Silva gets back to full guard.
Puyol is looking to work some ground and pound but Silva has wrist control.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Puyol shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Sergio Puyol is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Silva is in all sorts of trouble here.
Puyol takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Silva regains half guard.
Silva manages to get to full guard.
Silva lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Puyol!
Brandon Silva has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Silva with shots to the head and body - Puyol looks very uncomfortable down there.
Puyol manages to regain half guard whilst avoiding the strikes.
Puyol is looking to control Silva's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Puyol avoid being mounted?
Silva working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Puyol's thigh. Puyol counters though and makes it back to full guard.

Silva drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Puyol manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Silva has Puyol in his guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sergio Puyol showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Puyol has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
