PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Webster (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith comes to the cage accompanied by 2 minutes to midnight. Webster comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Run to the Hills by Iron Madien kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ben Webster!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Joseph Jones and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Webster throws a right and a left that Smith avoids nicely.
Webster throws a nice inside leg kick.
Smith shoots in but no luck this time.
Smith fails in his attempt to clinch.
Webster has his takedown stuffed

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into side control. Webster won't be happy with that.
Smith trying to control the position but Webster is working away.
Webster manages to get back to half guard.
Webster tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Smith trying to mount his opponent but Webster defends it.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Webster is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Webster manages to get to full guard.

Smith won't allow Webster to sweep him here.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Webster trying to control the position here.
Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Webster bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smith's guard.
Webster works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith manages to get to full guard.
Webster lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Smith controls Webster momentarily but Webster frees himself.
Smith is looking to stand up but Webster isn't so interested in that idea.
Smith is breathing heavily.
Webster is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Webster keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Smith's head.
Smith is trying to keep Webster in close.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith wants to stand but Webster is controlling the position.
Webster should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Webster tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Webster drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Webster jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Webster throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Smith on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Smith tries to get out of the position.
Webster won't allow Smith to get back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Smith misses with a few strikes there.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Webster looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Webster throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smith works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Smith isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Webster stacks Smith on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Webster!
Smith is trying to get back to half guard.
Smith is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Webster is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Smith tries to control the position but Webster now has his back.
Webster keeps control of the position as Smith tries to break free.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ben Webster dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Webster shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Webster stands up and waves to Smith to follow him.

and Smith counters with a shoot takedown. Webster fights it but they end up in guard.
Webster wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Smith pushes down on Webster's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smith blocks the strikes from Webster.

Smith is controlling the pace.
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Webster on the ground.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Webster is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Smith tries to pass the half guard into mount. Webster knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Webster scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Webster takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Webster passes the guard and advances to mount!
Smith is working to get back to half guard.
Smith tries to hold on but Webster pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Webster is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Webster has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Smith's face.
Smith is in all sorts of trouble here.
Smith tries to hold on but Webster pushes him away.

Webster is going olschool here, as he tries to force Smith to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smith shrugs it off.
Webster lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Webster looking to control but Smith is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Webster working for a guillotine from mount but Smith is in no mood to give up.
Smith is trying desperately to improve position.
Smith is squirming around, avoiding Webster's attempts to control the action.
Smith really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ben Webster will probably get the nod - 10:9.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Smith is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Smith just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt

and Webster counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Smith!

Webster goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Smith is on top in guard.
Webster wants to stand and escape but Smith is having none of it.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Webster holds on and takes a little breather.
Smith is stalling in the full guard.
Webster keeping full guard, as Smith tries to pass.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Webster throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Smith working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Smith passes into half guard.

Smith is looking for a kimura but Webster is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Smith to get the leverage.
Smith tries to pass to full mount but Webster defends it.
Smith trying to control from half guard but Webster is working away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Webster tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Webster's guard.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Webster keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Webster swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith stays in close to Webster's body and controls the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Webster has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
