Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julian Reis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sam Burgens! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Felipe Paraventi and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Reis keeps the fight on the outside. Reis looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! No luck for Reis with that takedown attempt. Burgens shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Reis looking for submissions off his back. Burgens with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Burgens postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Reis to stand up. Burgens shoots and misses and Reis counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Reis. Burgens is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Reis is controlling him. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Burgens looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Burgens wants to stand up but Reis is controlling him. Reis preventing the sweep. Burgens has his foot on Reis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Reis works his way back into a safe position though. Burgens controlling the position. Burgens manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Reis is working to get back to half guard.
Burgens throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Reis because Burgens loaded up on that one. Burgens looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Reis keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Burgens content just to control the position here. Reis blocking the ground and pound. Reis wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Burgens.
Burgens controlling the pace for now. Burgens is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet! Sam Burgens seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Burgens scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Burgens throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Reis looking for submissions off his back. Reis wants to improve his position but Burgens is controlling well.
Burgens has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Burgens has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Reis looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Reis is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Burgens.

Let's hope he's not broken it! Burgens tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Burgens fails to take his opponent's back. Burgens throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage. Burgens tries to control but Reis wriggling away. Burgens sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Reis keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Sam Burgens has got the better of the ground game so far. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Let's hope that Burgens has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. I really don't envy Reis right now.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Burgens thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent. Reis is trying to break free.
Burgens has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Reis's body.
Burgens somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back. Burgens trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Reis doesn't escape.
Despite being in the dominant position, Sam Burgens just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Burgens shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Burgens controlling his opponent. Reis looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Even with his hooks in, Burgens manages to miss with strikes from the back. Reis is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Reis breaks Burgens's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Burgens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Burgens trying to keep a closed guard but Reis is proving a slippery customer.

Sam Burgens showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!
Burgens shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Reis is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Burgens scores with a couple of nice shots. Burgens is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Burgens uses his free foot to push down on Reis's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Reis. Burgens looking to finish with strikes here!

That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. I really don't envy Reis right now.

Reis drops back, looking for a kneebar! Burgens looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Burgens looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Burgens! Reis is trying to get back to half guard. Burgens in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Burgens looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Reis manages to work his way to half guard, despite Burgens's best efforts. Reis looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Burgens wants to pass to mount but Reis is defending the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. It looks like Burgens is going to stand back up.
Reis looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Reis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Burgens controlling the pace. Sam Burgens is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Reis looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
And that's the end of the fight! Sam Burgens comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Burgens has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
