PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Randy Rage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charlie Kelly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Randy Rage!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Charlie Kelly!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rage misses with a straight left.

Rage takes the fight into the clinch.
Kelly goes for a takedown in the clinch but Rage prevents it.
Kelly has Rage pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Rage manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Rage is trying to trip Kelly. He has hold of a leg but Kelly is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Rage persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Rage stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kelly swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rage won't allow Kelly to get back to his feet.
Rage trying to control but Kelly is working from the bottom.

Rage drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Kelly dives on top into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Rage isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Kelly stacks Rage on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Kelly!
Rage manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Rage is keen to just control but Kelly is a slippery customer.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kelly can do anything to dispel that myth.

Rage is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kelly is just riding it out for now. Rage eventually gives up the hold.
Rage tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kelly knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rage thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kelly's head.
Rage sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kelly defending well though.
Kelly avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Rage.
Rage wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kelly keeps working.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Rage shoots in but Kelly avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Rage looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kelly gets a takedown into half guard.

Kelly moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Rage.
Kelly working the ground and pound.
Rage tries to buck Kelly off but Kelly is having none of it.
Kelly cracks Rage with a big right hand but Rage just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Rage takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kelly postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Rage is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Rage struggling a bit here.
Kelly working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Rage avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Kelly.
Kelly landing strikes.
Rage manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Rage is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Kelly's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Kelly's back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Charlie Kelly dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Rage with a lazy takedown attempt

so Kelly counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Rage throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Kelly scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Rage looking for a sweep. Not yet Rage, not yet.
Rage working a defensive guard here.
Kelly lands a couple of digs.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kelly is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Rage throws some shots to the body, keeping his opponent honest.
Rage is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rage throws a strike but Kelly avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Rage won't allow Kelly to get back to his feet.

Rage working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Rage is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Kelly is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Kelly has escaped and now he's on top!
Charlie Kelly has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kelly working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Rage manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Kelly is trying to stand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rage postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Kelly looks a forlorn figure.

Rage swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Kelly is now in Rage's guard. A big mistake from Rage there, giving up the dominant position!
Rage is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kelly cracks Rage with a solid left hand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Rage looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Kelly passes into half guard.
Rage trying to control here.
Rage moves into full guard.
Kelly won't allow Rage to sweep him here.
Kelly postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Rage manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Kelly is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Charlie Kelly showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


No luck with that takedown attempt from Kelly.

Kelly makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Kelly is working Rage over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Rage working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kelly doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kelly manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Kelly drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rage manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kelly has Rage in his guard.

Rage wants to control from the top but Kelly keeps moving.
Rage with a flurry of punches that miss.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rage looking to pass the guard.

Rage stands up and waves to Kelly to follow him.
Rage shoots in looking for a takedown. Kelly tries to sprawl out of it but Rage keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kelly manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Rage shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kelly napping and manages to drive through into side control!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kelly is trying to buck Rage off.

Rage is trying to get an arm triangle but Kelly is defending well.
Kelly takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Rage in side control, throwing shots but Kelly defends.
Randy Rage has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rage has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Kelly!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rage unloads with some shots from mount but Kelly bucks and avoids them well.
Rage avoids the attempt from Kelly to control.
Rage looking to finish with strikes here!
Rage takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Rage throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Randy Rage.
I think Kelly has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
