Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dave Matthews! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Garrick Ballantyne! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A slapping leg kick lands for Ballantyne.
Matthews feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Matthews drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Ballantyne manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Matthews has Ballantyne in his guard. Matthews is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Matthews throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Matthews throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Ballantyne sitting in guard here, content to control. Matthews has his foot on Ballantyne's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ballantyne works his way back into a safe position though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matthews is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Ballantyne is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Matthews looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Ballantyne sitting in guard here, content to control. Ballantyne wants to stand but Matthews is controlling his posture from full guard. Matthews has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Ballantyne can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Ballantyne really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Matthews. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Ballantyne wants to get up but he can't break Matthews's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Matthews has his foot on Ballantyne's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ballantyne works his way back into a safe position though. Ballantyne controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Matthews will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Matthews is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Matthews has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Ballantyne is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Matthews. Matthews is looking for a sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matthews seems a little lost for a moment, as Ballantyne dominates the positioning. Ballantyne wants to control but Matthews is keeping him busy. Matthews is looking to reverse the position. Ballantyne stands up and beckons Matthews to his feet. Matthews blocks a head kick by Ballantyne.
Ballantyne stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Ballantyne wants it to stay on the feet. Matthews shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ballantyne but Ballantyne pushes him off and we're back to square one. Matthews steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Ballantyne. That one must have hurt. Matthews is breathing heavily. Matthews takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Ballantyne stalks Matthews and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Matthews's face. Matthews staggers backwards, shaken. Ballantyne with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Matthews takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Matthews walks forward, straight into a front kick from Ballantyne. Ballantyne misses with a head kick.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Matthews chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Ballantyne can pounce on him.
Ballantyne cracks the inside of Matthews's front leg. Ballantyne lunges at Matthews with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Matthews's hand. Ballantyne throws a quick head kick that knocks Matthews silly! This fight is all over! What a finish! Ballantyne is up on the cage, taking in the applause from the crowd.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:17 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Garrick Ballantyne!
