PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Alard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and AJ Pencil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aaron Alard has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Aaron Alard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, AJ Pencil!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Albert Achterberg and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alard gets caught flat footed, as Pencil shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Pencil stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Alard swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pencil trying to control the position from guard on top but Alard is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Alard working for a triangle but Pencil defends it easily.

Pencil drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Alard manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Pencil has Alard in his guard.
Alard has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Pencil pulls Alard in close to his closed guard and prevents Alard from doing any damage or advancing position.

Alard missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Alard avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Pencil escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Alard gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Alard wants to control from the top but Pencil keeps moving.
Alard throws a strike but Pencil rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Pencil looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Alard wants to control but Pencil postures up.

Pencil wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alard, who protects the arm well.

Alard is trying to escape the position but Pencil is controlling the position.

Pencil working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Alard is looking to regain half guard here but Pencil keeps moving and retains side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pencil wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alard keeps working.

Pencil is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Alard has escaped the position, nice work there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pencil tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pencil has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Pencil wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alard keeps working.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

AJ Pencil dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Alard circles away from the clinch attempt.
Alard displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Pencil.
Alard takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Alard gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Pencil counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Pencil.
Alard controls Pencil momentarily but Pencil frees himself.

Pencil thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Pencil wants to control from the top but Alard keeps moving.

Alard pulls Pencil in close to prevent any damage.

Alard is looking for a triangle but Pencil pushes his legs off easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Pencil counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Alard wants to sweep but Pencil has passed to side control!

Pencil is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Alard knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Pencil looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Pencil wants to control but Alard is keeping him busy.
Alard is looking for a sweep.
Pencil wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alard keeps working.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Alard tries to buck Pencil off but Pencil is having none of it.

Alard is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
You can see the frustration on Alard's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Alard is being controlled here.
Alard is not content to let Pencil control the position.
Alard is trying to improve his position.
AJ Pencil has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alard wants to control but Pencil postures up.
Pencil trying to control the position but Alard is working away.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
A looping hook to the body misses from Pencil. Alard does a little dance to reset his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Pencil fails in his attempt to clinch.
Aaron Alard is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pencil tests Alard's chin there with a solid looking shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

AJ Pencil showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Alard has his takedown stuffed

and Pencil counters with a single leg into guard. Alard didn't expect that.
Pencil trying to control but Alard is working from the bottom.

Alard looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Alard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Pencil drops back, looking for a kneebar! Alard looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Alard looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Alard!

Pencil looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Pencil manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Alard manages to get himself to full guard.
Alard not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Alard can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Pencil controls the pace.
Pencil wants to control from the top but Alard keeps moving.
Alard controls Pencil momentarily but Pencil frees himself.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Pencil drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pencil jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Pencil is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Alard takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Pencil shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Pencil was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Alard is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Pencil can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Alard is looking to escape.
Pencil controlling the pace for now.

Pencil takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Pencil looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Pencil has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Alard is looking to improve his position but Pencil isn't that keen on the idea.
Pencil trying to control but Alard is having none of it.

Alard is in all sorts of trouble here.

Pencil is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Alard to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Alard shrugs it off.

Aaron Alard has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Pencil is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Alard can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

AJ Pencil comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pencil has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
