PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Lucas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and bobby Kuan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lucas comes into the arena with The Diary of Jane blaring out of the sound system. bobby Kuan is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Lucas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, bobby Kuan!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Bruno Hogan and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lucas fails in his attempt to clinch.
Lucas doesn't manage to clinch there - Kuan circles away.
Kuan leaves Lucas with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kuan blocks a head kick by Lucas.
Lucas could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Lucas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kuan swivels and escapes.
Kuan throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kuan throws a series of punches but Lucas moves out of range.
Kuan swats away the attempt to clinch by Lucas.
Kuan shoots and misses

and Lucas counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Lucas wants to control but Kuan is keeping him busy.
Lucas is taking a breather. Kuan says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Kuan is staying active underneath Lucas, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Lucas postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Kuan to stand up.
Kuan shoots in looking for a takedown. Lucas tries to sprawl out of it but Kuan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lucas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Kuan fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
John Lucas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of bobby Kuan.

The fight stays on the outside here - Lucas looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Lucas keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Lucas displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kuan.

Lucas darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Kuan looks gassed!

Lucas is keen to just control but Kuan is a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lucas not doing much here.
Lucas has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Lucas wants to take a breather but Kuan is having none of it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Kuan can do anything to dispel that myth.
Lucas prevents Kuan from improving his position.

Lucas looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Lucas is looking to take a break and control but Kuan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Lucas just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Lucas shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kuan but Kuan pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Kuan clinches up with Lucas and pushes him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lucas will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Kuan up against the cage.
Kuan gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Lucas.

Kuan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kuan fails with the takedown

and Lucas counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Lucas.

Lucas stands and steps away. Kuan gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Lucas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Lucas wants to clinch

and Kuan counters by clinching up.
Lucas unloads a knee to the mid-section. Kuan lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Lucas dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Lucas closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Lucas lands a body punch.

Kuan works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Lucas is trying to control the position but Kuan postures up.
Lucas looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kuan is one step ahead there.

Lucas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kuan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Kuan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kuan trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Lucas keeping moving, preventing Kuan from controlling successfully.

Lucas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kuan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Lucas here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Lucas pulls Kuan in close to his closed guard and prevents Kuan from doing any damage or advancing position.
Lucas not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Lucas manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Lucas looking to control but Kuan is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Lucas is really struggling to control Kuan but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Lucas is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Lucas darts in and clinches Kuan up against the cage.

Lucas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kuan with a poor takedown

and Lucas counters with a shoot takedown. Kuan fights it but they end up in guard.
Lucas trying to control but Kuan is working from the bottom.
Kuan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Lucas is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Lucas looking to sit in guard and control but Kuan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Lucas just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Kuan tries for a takedown but Lucas circles away easily

and Lucas counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Kuan had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Lucas defends it easily.
Kuan is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lucas wants to control from the top but Kuan keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Lucas's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Lucas shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Lucas showed some decent athleticism there.
Kuan is looking for a sweep. Lucas is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Lucas content to control rather than advance.
Kuan is looking to control Lucas's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kuan avoid being mounted?
Kuan wants to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Lucas uses his free foot to push down on Kuan's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Kuan.
Lucas trying to control but Kuan is having none of it.

Lucas is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kuan is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Lucas takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Kuan can't escape the position.

Lucas with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Kuan is working to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kuan wants to control but Lucas is having none of it.
Lucas trying to control but Kuan is having none of it.
Kuan is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Kuan is squirming around, avoiding Lucas's attempts to control the action.
Lucas looking to control and managing it successfully.

Lucas tries to control but Kuan wriggling away.
Kuan is desperately trying to improve his position but Lucas has a good base and remains in mount.
Lucas wants to control the pace but Kuan is squirming around nicely.

The referee stands the fighters back up. John Lucas just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Lucas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Lucas tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kuan swats him away and circles back towards the center.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

and Lucas counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Lucas shoots in and bounces Kuan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Lucas trying to control but Kuan is working from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kuan can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lucas controls the pace.
bobby Kuan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
John Lucas is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well Lucas has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
