PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jesus Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryce Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Carter's choice of entrance music: Empire State of Mind. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jesus Mendes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bryce Carter!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter shoots in for a takedown but Mendes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Mendes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Carter swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Mendes gets caught flat footed, as Carter shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Carter trying to control but Mendes is working from the bottom.
Carter sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Mendes's guard.
Mendes trying to control here.
Mendes is staying active underneath Carter, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mendes gets back to full guard.

Carter postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Mendes is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Carter, into his guard.
Carter looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Mendes with a flurry of punches that miss.

Mendes drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mendes jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Mendes tries to free his leg and advance position but Carter is retaining full guard.
Mendes has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carter is trying to keep Mendes in close.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Mendes fails in his attempt to clinch.
Carter keeps the fight on the outside.
Mendes tries to close the distance and clinch up but Carter swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Carter gets in close and instigates a clinch.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Mendes tries to pull guard but Carter holds him up against the cage and eventually Mendes drops back down to his feet.
Mendes working aggressively here.
Mendes is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Carter drags the fight down to the ground.

Carter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mendes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mendes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Mendes thows a big elbow that misses.
Carter is adopting a defensive guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mendes postures up.
Mendes trying to control but Carter is working from the bottom.

Carter tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mendes won't allow Carter to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Carter counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Carter.
Carter must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Carter wants to stand and escape but instead Mendes has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Mendes slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Mendes fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Mendes tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Mendes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Carter is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Mendes tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bryce Carter dominated that round.

Mendes lands with a kick to the temple. Carter shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Bryce Carter has been cut.

Mendes tries to clinch but Carter moves away

and Carter counters with a single leg into guard. Mendes didn't expect that.
Mendes is looking to stand up but Carter isn't so interested in that idea.

Carter looking to sit in guard and control but Mendes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Mendes passes Carter's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Carter moves into full guard.
Mendes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Mendes missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Carter looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Carter has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mendes off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
A chopping leg kick lands by Mendes.

Carter decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Carter is pressing down on Mendes's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mendes is holding on for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Carter is breathing heavily.
Carter stalling away here and it's allowed Mendes to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Mendes has his foot on Carter's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Carter works his way back into a safe position though.

Mendes is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Carter's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Carter wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mendes is looking to stand up but Carter isn't so interested in that idea.

Carter wants to control the pace but Mendes is squirming around nicely.

Carter goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Mendes is on top in guard.

Mendes is pushing down on Carter's leg trying to pass to half guard. Carter is fighting to maintain full guard but Mendes has managed to sneak the leg through.

Carter has a hand on Mendes's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Mendes takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Mendes tries to control but Carter wriggling away.
Carter is looking to get to half guard.
Mendes landing shots from mount.
Mendes postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Carter looks a forlorn figure.
Carter is working to get back to half guard.

Mendes is looking to stand but Mendes has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Mendes wants to finish this one by submission but Carter is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Mendes.
Mendes manages to capitalize on a mistake by Carter to take his back!
Carter looking very determined here, making life difficult for Mendes.
Mendes is trying to stick to Carter's back but Carter is turning into Mendes. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Mendes's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Carter.

Mendes throws a looping overhand right but Carter ducks down to avoid it.

and Carter counters by moving into the clinch.
Mendes using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Carter has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Carter pulls guard effortlessly.
Mendes trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mendes throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Carter avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Mendes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Carter looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Carter looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Carter!

Carter looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Bryce Carter is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Carter wants to control but Mendes is keeping him busy.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jesus Mendes.
I think Carter has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
