The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shirov circles away from the clinch attempt.
Robert throws a hook but Shirov avoids it easily.
Shirov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Robert to the mat! Robert manages to get full guard.
Shirov is pushing down on Robert's leg trying to pass to half guard. Robert is fighting to maintain full guard but Shirov has managed to sneak the leg through.
Shirov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Robert keeps working.
Shirov wants to free his trapped foot but Robert is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Shirov is trying to control. Robert wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Shirov is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Robert is just riding it out for now. Shirov eventually gives up the hold.

Robert got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shirov has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Robert has managed to get both his arms back between Shirov's legs - danger averted.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Shirov is on top in guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Robert can do anything to dispel that myth.

Shirov is looking to take a break and control but Robert is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Shirov feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shirov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Robert's waist but Robert gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Shirov off to one side.
Robert tries to clinch but Shirov moves out of range.
Robert looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shirov is fending him off so far but Robert persists. Nope, Shirov circles away and we're back to standing.

Shirov drops back looking for a leg! Robert is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Robert manages to kick Shirov off! Shirov jumps back into Robert's guard.
Robert working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shirov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shirov manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Shirov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Robert swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shirov is controlling this nicely and is looking to make no mistakes. Robert is trying to wiggle out of this horrible position. Robert flips to his side and attempts to get a leg in for half guard. Shirov anticipates the leg and manages to get behind Robert and secures both hooks! This could be bad! Shirov slips an arm under Robert chin and tries to position for a rear naked choke. Shirov has worked the choke in now and it looks tight. Shirov is squeezing on Robert like an anaconda would it's prey. Robert fails to tap and has fallen unconscious! We've got ourselves a winner by way of a rear naked choke!
