PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kenny Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Latter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Latter has chosen A New Divide by Linkin Park as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenny Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Latter!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith misses with a kick to the body.
Latter shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Latter slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Smith!
Nice takedown defense from Smith. No joy for Latter on that attempt.

Latter shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Smith works his way to full guard. Good work.
Latter wants to stand but Smith is controlling his posture from full guard.
Latter throwing strikes from guard but Smith blocks nicely.

Smith is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Latter is aware though and is defending well.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Latter makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Latter.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Smith happy to just control the position for now.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Latter is not content to let Smith control the position.

Smith is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Latter is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Latter is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Latter manages to get back to half guard.
Latter gets full guard.
Smith won't allow Latter to sweep him here.
Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Smith wants to control from the top but Latter keeps moving.
Smith thows a big elbow that misses.
Smith preventing the sweep.
Smith pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Latter is keeping the position for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Smith is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Latter really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Smith is breathing heavily.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Latter fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Smith sprawls well initially but Latter persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Latter throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Latter is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Smith trying to control from the bottom.
Latter keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Smith is doing well to control the position and prevent Latter from advancing to side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith trying to control from the bottom.

Smith wants to improve his position but Latter is controlling well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Latter looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Latter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Smith is adopting a defensive guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Charles Latter will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Latter shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Latter avoids a punch combination nicely.

Smith scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Smith tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Latter struggling a bit here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Smith misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

Smith is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Latter has escaped the position, nice work there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Latter is looking to reverse the position.
Latter is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Smith has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Smith thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Latter is looking for a sweep.
Latter gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Smith swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:03 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Kenny Smith!
