PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Thiago Cuba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Meoff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meoff has chosen big things poppin as his entrance music. Thiago Cuba has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thiago Cuba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Meoff!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, George Francis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No joy there for Meoff, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Meoff gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Meoff jumps guard and drags Cuba to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Meoff doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Cuba trying to control the position from guard on top but Meoff is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Meoff wants to sweep but no luck.
Cuba postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cuba trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Meoff controls Cuba momentarily but Cuba frees himself.

Cuba thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Horrible takedown by Meoff or perhaps it was just good defense by Cuba which made him look bad.

Meoff darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cuba wants to get back to full guard.

Cuba looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cuba has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Meoff is working away from the top position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Meoff looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Cuba is looking for a sweep. Meoff is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Cuba looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Meoff missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Cuba is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Meoff's half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Meoff won't allow Cuba to pass to mount.
Cuba is breathing heavily.
Meoff is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Cuba's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Cuba's back!
Meoff looking to soften up his opponent with punches.
Cuba rolls, trying to escape but Meoff keeps control of the position.

Meoff has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Cuba has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Meoff.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Meoff throws a head kick but Cuba moves out of range.
Cuba checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.

Meoff closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Cuba is not content to let Meoff control the position.

Meoff is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cuba knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Cuba tries to bench press Meoff off him but Meoff keeps the position.
Cuba might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Meoff wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Cuba, who protects the arm well.
Meoff is breathing heavily.

Meoff stands up and we're back to a striking position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Meoff fails in his attempt to clinch.
Meoff shoots and misses

and Cuba counters with a nice double leg into side control. Meoff won't be happy with that.

Cuba stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Meoff clobbers Cuba with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Meoff with a poor takedown

and Cuba counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Meoff's guard now.
Meoff keeping moving, preventing Cuba from controlling successfully.
Cuba trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Cuba is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Meoff is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Meoff has escaped and now he's on top!

Cuba is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Meoff defends well.
Meoff wants to control from the top but Cuba keeps moving.
Jack Meoff has got the better of the ground game so far.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Meoff looking to sit in guard and control but Cuba gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cuba drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Meoff manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cuba has Meoff in his guard.
Meoff pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Cuba is keeping the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Thiago Cuba dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Cuba gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Meoff to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Cuba trying to control the position.

Meoff stands up from guard. Let's bang!
A punch combination from Meoff misses.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Meoff tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cuba swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Meoff throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Meoff fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Cuba sprawls well initially but Meoff persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Meoff tries to stand but can't do so whilst Cuba controls his leg.
Cuba wants to improve his position but Meoff is controlling well.

Cuba looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Meoff trying to control from half guard but Cuba is working away.
Meoff lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Meoff perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Meoff looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Meoff prevents Cuba from improving his position.
Cuba taking some punishment here, with Meoff in his half guard.
Meoff is looking to advance position but Cuba won't allow it.
Meoff thows a huge punch but Cuba dodges it nicely.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Meoff working the head and body with strikes.
Cuba is staying active underneath Meoff, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Meoff is pressing down on Cuba's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cuba is holding on for now.

Meoff is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Meoff throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jack Meoff comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Meoff has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
