PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brendan Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Connor McCloud (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connor McCloud will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Brendan Khan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Connor McCloud!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Paul Tew and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Khan takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Connor McCloud seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Khan looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Khan thows a huge punch but McCloud dodges it nicely.
Khan missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Khan perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McCloud can do anything to dispel that myth.
Khan wants to free his trapped foot but McCloud is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Khan takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
McCloud is refusing to be controlled, as Khan sits in half guard.
Khan seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Khan is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
McCloud tries to kick Khan off but Khan keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Khan content to control rather than advance.
Khan uses his free foot to push down on McCloud's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for McCloud.

Poor strikes thrown by Khan there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
McCloud avoids a series of strikes thrown by Khan.
Khan sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
McCloud is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Khan controlling his opponent.
McCloud really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Khan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Khan is defended easily by McCloud.
McCloud slaps away a takedown attempt from Khan, before circling back to the center of the mat.
McCloud throws a right and a left that both miss.
Khan circles away from the clinch attempt.
A combination from McCloud does no damage.
Khan paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Brendan Khan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
McCloud stuffs the takedown attempt from Khan. Khan gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brendan Khan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Khan shoots in but McCloud avoids the takedown attempt easily.
McCloud throws a right and a left that both miss.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Khan misses with a hook from the clinch.
Khan putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has McCloud in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

McCloud is trying to break the clinch but Khan is controlling him.
Khan is trying to drag McCloud to the mat but McCloud just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
A left hand lands to the body for Khan.
McCloud makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Khan is working for takedown but McCloud is calmly controlling the position for now.
McCloud tries to break free but Khan pushes him back against the cage.
Khan tries for a takedown but McCloud manages to get underhooks.
Khan can't get the takedown.
McCloud wants to get back to striking at distance but Khan won't allow it.
McCloud on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Khan drops to a knee looking for a takedown but McCloud gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Khan changes levels and goes for a takedown here. McCloud fights it off and pushes away nicely.

McCloud gets caught flat footed, as Khan shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
McCloud looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Khan not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

McCloud keeping moving, preventing Khan from controlling successfully.
McCloud working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Khan.
Khan with a flurry of punches that miss.
McCloud avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Khan throws a strike but McCloud rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
McCloud won't allow Khan to sweep him here.
Khan is working hard here to advance position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Khan throws a hook but McCloud avoids it easily.
McCloud fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Khan lands a head shot.
McCloud stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and McCloud wants it to stay on the feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Nice sprawl there from McCloud as Khan shoots in.
Khan looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Khan moves into the clinch successfully.
Khan's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
McCloud lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Khan tries for a takedown but McCloud manages to get underhooks.
Khan blocks an uppercut.
Khan trying to land knees to the body.
Khan goes for a takedown in the clinch but McCloud prevents it.
McCloud tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
A frustrated look appears on McCloud's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Khan lands a damaging elbow.
McCloud is looking to break free of the clinch but Khan has double underhooks.
Khan has McCloud pressed against the cage, preventing McCloud from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
McCloud avoids the elbow strike from Khan, against the cage.
Khan goes for a takedown attempt but McCloud pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Khan misses with a few strikes there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Brendan Khan will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


McCloud lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Khan fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
McCloud tries to close the distance and clinch but Khan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Khan closes the distance and clinches up with McCloud, looking for a takedown. Khan pushes McCloud against the cage but McCloud circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Khan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McCloud as he jumps to the side.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
McCloud swings away with an uppercut that misses.
McCloud tries to break the clinch but Khan is controlling the position.

McCloud breaks from the clinch.
Khan looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

McCloud fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Khan, pushing him back against the cage.
McCloud avoiding damage.
Khan has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. McCloud is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
McCloud scores with a shoulder strike.
A short uppercut from McCloud.
McCloud tries to circle away but Khan has him pinned against the cage.
McCloud looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
McCloud can't break the clinch.
McCloud lands a right hand.
Khan lands an uppercut.
Khan has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. McCloud is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
McCloud is pushing Khan up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
McCloud wants to get back to striking at distance but Khan won't allow it.
Khan has McCloud pressed against the cage, preventing McCloud from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

McCloud takes a knee to the side of the body.
Khan is looking for a takedown up against the cage. McCloud gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

McCloud is looking to break free of the clinch but Khan has double underhooks.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McCloud misses with some punches.

Khan blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Khan lands a nice shot to the body.
McCloud wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Khan has him pressed against the cage.
McCloud is pressed up against the cage. Khan has hold of a leg and is looking to drag McCloud down to the mat. McCloud avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Khan throws a series of punches but McCloud avoids them all with ease.
Khan dives in and grabs McCloud's left leg, looking for a takedown. McCloud pushes down on Khan's head and hops out.

Khan closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
McCloud sneaks back into half guard.

Khan is looking for a kimura but McCloud is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Khan to get the leverage.
Khan wants to free his trapped foot but McCloud is holding on for dear life with his legs.
McCloud wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Khan is taking a breather. McCloud says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Khan working over McCloud with some ground and pound. McCloud looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Khan thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McCloud's head.
Connor McCloud has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Brendan Khan is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Khan has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Khan is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Connor McCloud comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Khan has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
