PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Marco Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Rua might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to The Fight Song by Marilyn Manson. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Daniel Santos enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marco Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Santos!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Thiago Cunha and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Santos closes the distance and clinches up with Rua, looking for a takedown. Santos pushes Rua against the cage but Rua circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Santos feints and as Rua raises his hands in defense, Santos changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Rua wants to stand and escape but Santos is having none of it.
Rua trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Santos slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Santos's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Rua wants to get back to his feet but Santos passes into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rua is working hard here to advance position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Santos shoots in for a double leg but Rua sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rua leaves Santos with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Marco Rua has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniel Santos.
Santos changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rua tries to avoid it but Santos manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rua to the ground. Rua escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Rua dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Santos. That did some damage!

Rua tries to land a front kick but Santos steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Rua tries to close the distance and clinch up but Santos swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Santos lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Rua circles away quickly and effectively.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Santos crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Rua - the referee stops the clock and Santos gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Rua. Santos manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Rua moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Rua throws a right and a left that Santos avoids nicely.
Rua pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Rua throws a front kick that sends Santos stumbling back into the cage.

Rua feints and then cracks Santos's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Santos down.

Rua moves into the clinch successfully.
Rua with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Rua tries to land knees in the clinch but Santos avoids the damage to the body.

Santos utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Santos looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Rua has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Santos is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Santos throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Rua was covering up waiting for the punch and Santos finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Rua is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Santos has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Santos!

Santos seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Rua has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Santos can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rua tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Marco Rua will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Santos shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rua's guard.

Santos drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Santos jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Rua is staying active underneath Santos, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Santos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Daniel Santos comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rua has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
