PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Phillip Ivey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Flavio Sandoval (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phillip Ivey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Flavio Sandoval!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Elvis Blanc and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ivey closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ivey lands in his opponent's guard.
Sandoval pulls Ivey in close to prevent any damage.
Sandoval tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sandoval is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Ivey missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Sandoval trying to keep a closed guard but Ivey is proving a slippery customer.
Ivey is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Sandoval controls Ivey momentarily but Ivey frees himself.
Ivey wanted to stand there but Sandoval had control of the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Ivey walks into a stiff left hand from Sandoval.
Ivey keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Sandoval.
A looping hook to the body misses from Sandoval. Ivey does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sandoval scores with the left hand. Ivey knows he should have avoided that one.
Flavio Sandoval seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ivey shoots in and bounces Sandoval off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sandoval can do anything to dispel that myth.
Ivey trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Ivey being controlled here momentarily.
Ivey postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Sandoval wants to sweep but no luck.
Ivey trying to control but Sandoval is working from the bottom.

Sandoval not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Ivey shoots in for a double leg but Sandoval sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Sandoval wants to slow Ivey down by chopping away at his legs.
Ivey walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Ivey is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ivey drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.

Sandoval controlling the position.
Sandoval looking for a sweep. Not yet Sandoval, not yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sandoval has control of Ivey's left arm, preventing Ivey from doing any damage.
Ivey looking to pass the guard.
Ivey won't allow Sandoval to sweep him here.
Ivey thows a big elbow that misses.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ivey trying to control the position from guard on top but Sandoval is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ivey wants to stand but Sandoval is controlling his posture from full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sandoval swats away the attempt to clinch by Ivey.
Ivey avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Sandoval misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sandoval lands a body shot.
Sandoval uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Ivey has time to react.
Sandoval lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Sandoval ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Sandoval lands a body shot.
Sandoval works the jab nicely.
Sandoval connects with a looping right hand.
Sandoval ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Sandoval clobbers Ivey with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
A decent looking cross lands there for Sandoval.
Ivey takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Ivey on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Nice combo by Sandoval! Oh, that's hurt him - Ivey falls to the canvas and Sandoval follows him into side control.


Ivey is rocked!
Ivey seems a little lost for a moment, as Sandoval dominates the positioning.
Oh Ivey is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ivey seems to have got his legs back now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Flavio Sandoval dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Sandoval digs a good hook to Ivey's body.
Phillip Ivey is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Sandoval throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Sandoval with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Sandoval dips to his left and cracks Ivey with an uppercut!
Ivey takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sandoval connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Ivey's hands.
Ivey takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Sandoval drops Ivey with a big left hand! Ivey is injured, injured bad! Sandoval jumps in and finished him with strikes! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Flavio Sandoval!
