Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, charles smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Walt Roofer! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Tiny Johnson and Alan Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! smith fails with a takedown attempt. smith takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Roofer throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
smith will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. smith shoots in for a takedown but Roofer shows good takedown defense. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for charles smith. That's going to take a lot out of him. Roofer shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts smith as he jumps to the side. Roofer scores with a three punch combo!
smith fails with the takedown and Roofer counters with a one-two to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. smith with a poor takedown and Roofer counters with a low kick, right behind smith 's knee. charles smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. smith is breathing heavily. Excellent takedown into side control there by Roofer. Roofer advances to full mount. Roofer won't let smith get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now. Roofer wants to control the pace but smith is squirming around nicely. Roofer controlling the position easily from mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. smith really wants to buck Roofer off and get back to his feet. smith blocking the ground and pound. smith is looking to get to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roofer looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Roofer trying to control but he's not successful this time. smith holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Roofer tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Roofer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Roofer controlling the pace for now. Roofer throws some wild stikes that smith manages to avoid easily.
smith tries to get back to half guard but can't. Roofer is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. smith can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
That's three minutes gone in the round. smith is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Roofer tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Roofer is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but smith is surviving well by controlling Roofer's body position as best he can. smith keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Roofer can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as smith is looking to escape.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Roofer sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Roofer looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Roofer content just to control the position here. Roofer can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as smith is looking to escape. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. smith tries to reverse the position but Roofer maintains control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Walt Roofer dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Roofer lands a slapping body shot.
Roofer moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. smith with a lazy takedown attempt and Roofer counters with a head kick. Roofer closes the distance and lands a one-two. A nice leg kick lands there from Roofer. Roofer throws a nice outside leg kick. Roofer displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. smith tries for a takedown but Roofer circles away easily and Roofer counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Roofer scores with a head kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. A slapping leg kick lands for Roofer.
The fight stays on the outside here - Roofer looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Nice shot by Roofer. Roofer tries to clinch up. Roofer looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Roofer's corner is telling him to maintain position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Roofer trying to control but smith is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roofer trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Roofer forces his way into half guard. Roofer is trying to control the action in half guard but smith is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. smith tries to get to full guard but Roofer has control of the leg. Roofer trying to pass the guard but smith defending well. Roofer is trying to work for a kimura but smith is defending well.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Roofer throws a combination. smith tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roofer throws a head kick that misses. smith showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Roofer.
A slapping leg kick lands for Roofer.
Roofer feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Roofer is pushing down on smith's leg trying to pass to half guard. smith is fighting to maintain full guard but Roofer has managed to sneak the leg through. smith tries to get to full guard but Roofer has control of the leg. smith is not content to let Roofer control the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. smith trying to control but Roofer postures up.
Roofer is pressing down on smith's thigh, looking to free his foot. smith is holding on for now. smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Roofer is working away from the top position though.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Roofer lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as smith backs up against the cage.
Roofer's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Roofer duly obliges. Roofer lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Walt Roofer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

smith misses with a takedown attempt and Roofer counters with a shoot takedown. smith fights it but they end up in guard. Roofer won't allow smith to sweep him here. smith keeping moving, preventing Roofer from controlling successfully. smith controls Roofer momentarily but Roofer frees himself. Roofer is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Roofer sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed smith's guard. Roofer stalling. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Roofer passes the guard and advances to mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Roofer thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Roofer lands a big shot there that rocks smith but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Roofer tries to control but smith wriggling away. Roofer throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for smith because Roofer loaded up on that one. Roofer throws some wild stikes that smith manages to avoid easily.
Roofer has hold of smith's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and smith manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
smith is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Roofer looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Roofer looking to secure an arm triangle but smith defends it well. smith gets back to half guard. Roofer is trying to control. smith wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. smith is looking for a sweep. Roofer is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Roofer wants to take a breather but smith is having none of it. smith is looking to improve his position.
smith won't allow Roofer to pass to mount. smith is trying to get back to full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Roofer is thwarting smith's attempts to control the position. Roofer looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. smith doesn't succeed with the takedown and Roofer counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. smith shoots and misses and Roofer counters with a thumping low kick. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for charles smith. That's going to take a lot out of him. smith has his takedown stuffed and Roofer counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Roofer shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
That's four minutes gone in the round. smith is looking for a triangle but Roofer pushes his legs off easily.

Roofer missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Roofer must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Roofer wants to control from the top but smith keeps moving. smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
charles smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Walt Roofer is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Roofer pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. smith is keeping the position for now.
And that's the end of the fight! Walt Roofer comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Roofer has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
