PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Hayden Brass (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George St Pierre (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hayden Brass!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, George St Pierre!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
St Pierre slips a jab and a cross from Brass.
Brass will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
St Pierre misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
St Pierre wants to clinch up but Brass keeps it at a distance.
St Pierre takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Brass throws a leg kick which misses St Pierre's front leg but catches the back leg as St Pierre tries to avoid it.
St Pierre shoots for a double leg takedown but Brass sprawls well. He's pushed St Pierre's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
A head kick misses from Brass.
Brass lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.


It looks like George St Pierre has been cut.
St Pierre is looking to clinch.
Horrible takedown by St Pierre or perhaps it was just good defense by Brass which made him look bad.
St Pierre shoots in but no luck this time.
Hayden Brass has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George St Pierre.
A slapping leg kick lands for Brass.
St Pierre wants to clinch.
Nice uppercut there from Brass.

Jab by Brass.
Brass swings and misses with a hook to the body.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! St Pierre crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Brass - the referee stops the clock and St Pierre gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Brass. St Pierre manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Brass throws a solid leg kick but St Pierre takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Brass.
St Pierre throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Brass's waist but Brass gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing St Pierre off to one side.
Brass lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as St Pierre backs up against the cage.
Brass scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Brass lets loose with a powerful body kick. St Pierre will feel that in the morning.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Brass throws a right hand that St Pierre ducks under and follows up with a left that St Pierre also avoids with ease.

Brass lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends St Pierre sprawling to the canvas. Brass follows him down, looking for the kill. Can St Pierre hang on?

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

St Pierre wants to improve his position but Brass is controlling well.
St Pierre is still in real trouble! Can Brass finish him?
Brass looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
St Pierre seems to have recovered his senses.
Still in half guard, Brass seems content to control.
St Pierre avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Brass.
Brass slips a nice elbow through St Pierre's hands, connecting with St Pierre's forehead.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Brass lands a nice short elbow.

Brass throwing shots but St Pierre is blocking nicely.

St Pierre is trying to maintain the position but Brass is very close to passing his half guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
St Pierre is not content to let Brass control the position.
St Pierre works his way to full guard. Good work.

and Brass counters with a stiff right hand.
St Pierre moves out of range as Brass throws a body kick.

St Pierre shoots in but Brass avoids the takedown attempt easily.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

St Pierre shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Brass pinned against the cage. Brass gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Brass motions for St Pierre to come forward. Brass throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

and St Pierre counters with a nice double leg into side control. Brass won't be happy with that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

St Pierre remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

St Pierre has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

St Pierre dives in and grabs Brass's left leg, looking for a takedown. Brass pushes down on St Pierre's head and hops out.

Brass throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Brass is looking for a sweep.

St Pierre tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no St Pierre has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Brass is trying to buck St Pierre off.
St Pierre is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
St Pierre throws a strike aimed at the side of Brass's head but Brass avoids it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

George St Pierre showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


St Pierre dives in and grabs Brass's left leg, looking for a takedown. Brass pushes down on St Pierre's head and hops out.
St Pierre fails with a takedown attempt.
St Pierre feints and then cracks Brass's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Brass down.
Brass missing with a left hand there. St Pierre was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Brass!
St Pierre lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Brass chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before St Pierre can pounce on him.

and Brass counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Brass throws a left and a right that both miss

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

St Pierre decides to stand back up.
St Pierre shoots for a double leg takedown but Brass sprawls well. He's pushed St Pierre's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Hayden Brass has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George St Pierre.
St Pierre takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
St Pierre tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Brass swivels and escapes.
Brass misses with a kick to the body
and St Pierre makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Brass really felt that one!

Brass avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
St Pierre tries to score a power double leg takedown but Brass sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten St Pierre somewhat.

St Pierre connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Brass stuffs the takedown attempt from St Pierre. St Pierre gets slowly back to his feet.

St Pierre fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Brass avoids it really well and circles away.
Brass throws a nice outside leg kick.
St Pierre on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Brass. Brass obviously looking to wear him down.
St Pierre misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
St Pierre takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Brass dips to his left and cracks St Pierre with an uppercut!
St Pierre has a takedown stuffed.
St Pierre changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Brass tries to avoid it but St Pierre manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Brass to the ground. Brass escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
St Pierre looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A low kick from Brass is predictable there

so St Pierre counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
St Pierre throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
St Pierre controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
St Pierre missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
St Pierre is looking to advance position but Brass has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

George St Pierre comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think St Pierre has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
