PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Vass (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nick Vass is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Mir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Vass!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mir fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Vass sprawls well initially but Mir persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Vass is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Vass pushes Mir off looking to stand but Mir dives back in and keeps control.
Vass is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Still in half guard, Mir seems content to control.
Vass pushes Mir off looking to stand but Mir dives back in and keeps control.
Vass is trying to get back to full guard.
Mir looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vass wants to get back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Mir thuds a left hand into Vass's body.
Mir shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mir misses with a takedown attempt - Vass sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Horrible takedown by Mir or perhaps it was just good defense by Vass which made him look bad.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Frank Mir. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Vass leaves Mir with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Vass bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mir manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Vass pushes Mir off looking to stand but Mir dives back in and keeps control.

Mir is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Vass is just riding it out for now. Mir eventually gives up the hold.
Mir is breathing heavily.

Mir is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Vass gets back to full guard.

Vass manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Vass gets caught flat footed, as Mir shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Mir trying to control the position from guard on top but Vass is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mir pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Vass is keeping the position for now.
Vass not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Vass looking for a sweep. Not yet Vass, not yet.
Vass wants to stand but Mir is controlling the position.
Vass looking for a sweep. Not yet Vass, not yet.
Vass is pulling down on Mir's head to control his posture.
Vass wants to stand and escape but Mir is having none of it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Mir has his takedown stuffed

and Vass counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mir!
Mir wants to control but Vass is having none of it.

Vass stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Vass dives in and grabs Mir's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mir pushes down on Vass's head and hops out.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Vass.

Vass decides to take the fight back to the feet.
No joy there for Mir, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Vass shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Vass showed some decent athleticism there.
Mir is looking for a sweep. Vass is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Vass is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mir defends it well.

Vass looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Mir is concentrating on defense, preventing Vass from advancing position.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Mir has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Vass. Oh but Mir has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Vass goes limp - he's gone! Mir jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Frank Mir!
