PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Spike Steed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Naoya Shiraishi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shiraishi has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Naoya Shiraishi was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Spike Steed!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Naoya Shiraishi!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Robert Twigg and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steed is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Steed throws a right hand that Shiraishi ducks under and follows up with a left that Shiraishi also avoids with ease.
Steed wants to clinch.
Steed ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Shiraishi looks gassed!
Steed tries to clinch but Shiraishi is having none of it.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shiraishi.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Steed doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Shiraishi counters with a single leg into guard. Steed didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Steed wants to stand but Shiraishi is controlling the position.

Steed not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Steed tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Steed has his hands on Shiraishi's head, controlling the position.

Shiraishi drops back, looking for a kneebar! Steed looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Steed looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Steed!
You can see the frustration on Shiraishi's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Steed seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Shiraishi for as long as he can get away with.

Steed will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Steed really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Shiraishi is not content to let Steed control the position.
Shiraishi gets back to half guard.
Steed is looking to take a break and control but Shiraishi is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Spike Steed.
Steed tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Shiraishi counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Steed moves in looking to clinch but Shiraishi pushes him off.

Shiraishi drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Steed dives on top into guard.

Shiraishi controls Steed momentarily but Steed frees himself.
Steed prevents Shiraishi from getting back to his feet.
Steed cracks Shiraishi with a solid left hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they both work up against the meshing.

Shiraishi is looking to stand up but Steed isn't so interested in that idea.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Steed wants to control from the top but Shiraishi keeps moving.
Steed with a flurry of punches that miss.
Steed controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Spike Steed.
Steed shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shiraishi as he jumps to the side.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Naoya Shiraishi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Shiraishi has his takedown stuffed
and Steed counters with a head kick. That will keep Shiraishi thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Steed fails to land the takedown.

Shiraishi shoots in and bounces Steed off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Steed throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Steed pulls Shiraishi in close to prevent any damage.
Shiraishi is standing up over Steed. Steed looks to escape but Shiraishi dives into side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Steed gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Steed makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Steed.
Shiraishi won't allow Steed to sweep him here.

Shiraishi decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Steed, up you get!

and Shiraishi counters with a nice double leg into side control. Steed won't be happy with that.
Steed gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Shiraishi blocks the strikes from Steed.
Steed gets back to full guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Steed wants to stand but Shiraishi is controlling his arm.
Shiraishi is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Steed asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Steed in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Steed is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Shiraishi is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Steed wants to control but Shiraishi is keeping him busy.
Shiraishi tries to escape but Steed is in control.

and Shiraishi counters with a nice double leg into side control. Steed won't be happy with that.

Shiraishi makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Shiraishi clinches with his opponent.
Still in the clinch, Shiraishi scores with a nice short uppercut.
Spike Steed has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Shiraishi tries to clinch up but Steed circles away and keeps his distance.

Naoya Shiraishi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Shiraishi winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
