PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Pedro Penduko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan Payne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Ryan Payne was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pedro Penduko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ryan Payne !
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Bruno Hogan and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Payne wants to clinch.
Payne tries to clinch but Penduko is having none of it.
Payne tries to close the distance and clinch but Penduko swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Payne lands a high kick!
Payne fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Payne tries a head kick but it misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Payne tries to clinch but Penduko is having none of it.
Payne shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Penduko as he jumps to the side.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Payne fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Pedro Penduko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ryan Payne .
Payne looks for a takedown but Penduko sprawls well.
Payne tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Penduko paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Payne will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Payne throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Penduko shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Penduko was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Penduko is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Payne can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Penduko prevents Payne from getting the reversal.
Penduko wants to take Payne 's back here but Payne is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.

Penduko is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Payne has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Penduko is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Payne to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Payne shrugs it off.
Penduko is breathing heavily.

Payne wants to control but Penduko is having none of it.
Payne regains half guard.

Penduko seems to be working for a kimura but Payne defends the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penduko trying to mount his opponent but Payne defends it.
Payne is looking to improve his position.
Payne is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Penduko's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Penduko's back!
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Payne 's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Payne has the hooks in. Penduko is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Payne might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Penduko kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Penduko tries to escape but Payne has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Payne with a poor takedown

and Penduko counters with a single leg into guard. Payne didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Penduko thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Payne is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Penduko is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Penduko thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Penduko drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Payne dives on top into guard.
Payne trying to control but Penduko is working from the bottom.
Payne is stalling in the full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Payne trying to control the position from guard on top but Penduko is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penduko looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Penduko is looking for a triangle here but Payne uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Penduko might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Payne grinds an elbow into Penduko's temple.
Payne is looking to take a break and control but Penduko is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Penduko manages to work his way to half guard, despite Payne 's best efforts.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Payne wants to pass the guard but Penduko is defending well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Payne misses with the combination.

and Penduko counters with a shoot takedown. Payne fights it but they end up in guard.

Payne looking to hit a scissor sweep but Penduko is one step ahead there.
Payne can't keep his opponent in guard - Penduko advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Penduko is working for a kimura but Payne is defending it quite comfortably.

Penduko is working for a submission of some sort.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Payne is looking to escape.
Penduko looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Penduko seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Payne has recovered full guard.
Penduko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Payne swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Payne is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Payne trying to keep a closed guard but Penduko is proving a slippery customer.
Penduko wants to pass the guard but Payne is keeping the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Penduko shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Payne 's guard.
Payne is controlling Penduko's posture.
Penduko passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Payne manages to get back to half guard.
Pedro Penduko overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Penduko is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Payne is trying to escape and Penduko transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Payne is forced to tap! Nice work there by Penduko! Very nice indeed!
