PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jorje Slayer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ethan Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Slayer comes into the arena with Otep - Battle Ready blaring out of the sound system. Ethan Penn struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 156.2lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ethan Penn!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Emerson Jorge and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn doesn't manage to clinch there - Slayer circles away.
Penn cracks Slayer with a right hand to the side of the head.
Penn scores with the left hand. Slayer knows he should have avoided that one.
Slayer walks into a straight right hand from Penn.
Penn lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Penn connects with the punch.
Slayer has a takedown stuffed.
Penn lands a nice hook to Slayer's body. Slayer takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Slayer slips a straight right by Penn.
Penn tries to bum rush Slayer with a series of wild strikes but Slayer uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Penn getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Penn moves in looking to clinch but Slayer pushes him off.
Penn throws a lazy right hand but Slayer sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Slayer tries to keep at a distance but Penn has taken the fight into the clinch.
Penn wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Penn digs a right hand into Slayer's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Slayer's gas tank.
Penn lands a hook that snaps the head of Slayer backwards.
A body shot lands from Penn.
Slayer tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Penn just stands there and leans against the cage.
Slayer prevents Penn from breaking the clinch.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jorje Slayer. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn lands with a short shot to the head.
Penn lands a body shot in the clinch.

Penn breaks the clinch.
Penn throws a series of punches but Slayer avoids them all with ease.
Penn stuffs the takedown.
Penn ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Slayer moves away.
Penn leaves Slayer with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Slayer slips a jab and a cross from Penn.

Slayer shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Slayer drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Penn manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Slayer has Penn in his guard.

Penn controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Slayer is on top in guard.
Penn can't keep his opponent in guard - Slayer advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Slayer seems to be looking for submissions.

Slayer is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Penn defends it well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penn is pressing down on Slayer's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Slayer closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penn to the mat! Penn manages to get full guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Penn wants to stand and escape but Slayer is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Penn lands a big shot there that rocks Slayer but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Penn tries to control but Slayer wriggling away.
Penn thowing shots but they're missing.
Penn trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Slayer blocking the ground and pound.
Slayer is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Slayer swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Penn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Slayer is looking to escape.
Penn is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Despite being in the dominant position, Ethan Penn just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Slayer shoots for a takedown but Penn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Slayer closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Penn did well to prevent Slayer getting side control.

Slayer is looking for a kimura here.

Slayer is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Penn sees it coming and defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn is looking to improve his position.
Penn trying to get back to full guard but Slayer takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
Penn is trying desperately to improve position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ethan Penn will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Slayer moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Slayer has gone for a leg lock! Penn slips out almost immediately though and dives into Slayer's guard.

Slayer slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Penn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Penn is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Slayer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Penn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Penn manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Slayer escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Penn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Penn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
