PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Howard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Dugre (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Howard's entrance music is Can't Touch This. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, John Howard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chris Dugre!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Howard scores with a body shot.
Howard throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Nice defenses there by Dugre.
Howard lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Dugre circles away quickly and effectively.
Dugre with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Howard to score with a decent uppercut.
Howard misses with a double jab.
Howard tries to clinch up but Dugre circles away and keeps his distance.
Dugre fails with a takedown attempt.

Dugre shoots in and bounces Howard off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Howard preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Dugre postures up.
Dugre wants to control from the top but Howard keeps moving.
Dugre tries to free his leg and advance position but Howard is retaining full guard.

Howard not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Dugre looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Howard loads up on a big right hand but Dugre slips the punch.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Howard misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Nice takedown defense from Dugre. No joy for Howard on that attempt.

John Howard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Dugre avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Howard throws a right and a left that Dugre avoids nicely.
Howard misses with a jab, cross combination.
Howard throws a nice looking combination but Dugre bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Howard throws out a loose jab but Dugre uses good head movement to avoid it.
Dugre shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Howard defends it nicely.
John Howard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Dugre.
Howard throws a right and a left that Dugre avoids nicely.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

and Dugre counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Dugre avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Dugre in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Howard controls Dugre momentarily but Dugre frees himself.
Dugre controlling from the top position.
Howard not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Dugre dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Dugre shoots in but Howard avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Howard wants to clinch but Dugre slips to the side

and Dugre counters with a single leg into guard. Howard didn't expect that.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Howard is on top in guard.
Howard trying to control the position from guard on top but Dugre is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Howard slips nicely into half guard.
Howard is looking to take a break and control but Dugre is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Dugre makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

and Dugre counters with a big head kick but Howard shrugs it off.
Dugre is breathing heavily.

Dugre showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Howard.
Howard comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Howard shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Howard showed some decent athleticism there.
Dugre is refusing to be controlled, as Howard sits in half guard.
Howard is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Dugre is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Howard thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Howard seems to be working for a kimura but Dugre defends the submission attempt.

Howard wants to take a breather but Dugre is having none of it.
Dugre blocking the ground and pound attempt from Howard.
Howard trying to control the action but Dugre is working from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Howard looks to clinch

so Dugre counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Howard is trying to keep Dugre in close.
Dugre stopping the sweep attempt from Howard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dugre looking to sit in guard and control but Howard gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Chris Dugre has got the better of the ground game so far.

Howard is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Howard works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Dugre is not content to let Howard control the position.

Howard is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Howard is looking to stall here but Dugre recovers full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Howard stands and steps away. Dugre gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
A combination from Howard does no damage.
Howard throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Howard lands a right hook to the body.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Dugre displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Howard.
Howard has his takedown stuffed

so Dugre counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Dugre showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


No joy there for Howard, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Howard shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Dugre pinned against the cage. Dugre gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Howard connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Howard fails with the takedown.
Howard tries to clinch but Dugre is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Howard doesn't manage to clinch there - Dugre circles away.
Howard tries to close the distance and clinch but Dugre swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Dugre takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Howard tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Dugre counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Howard's guard now.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Howard is on top in guard.
Dugre is looking to stand up but Howard isn't so interested in that idea.
Dugre preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Howard is pushing down on Dugre's leg trying to pass to half guard. Dugre is fighting to maintain full guard but Howard has managed to sneak the leg through.
Howard is keen to just control but Dugre is a slippery customer.

Howard is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Dugre is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:02 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Howard!
