PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marco Ruiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kick Ass (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ruiz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is U're the Best Around. Kick Ass struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 172.1lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Marco Ruiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kick Ass!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Wesley Smith and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruiz lands with a thumping leg kick.
Ass looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Ruiz throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Ruiz closes the distance and clinches up with Ass, looking for a takedown. Ruiz pushes Ass against the cage but Ass circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Ruiz swinging wilding here.
Ruiz missing with a left hand there. Ass was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Ruiz misses with a straight right.
Ruiz throws a low kick but it's checked well by Ass.
A big left from Ruiz misses.
Ruiz moves in looking to clinch but Ass pushes him off.
Ass takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Ruiz tries for a takedown but Ass sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Ass shoots in and bounces Ruiz off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Ruiz wants to get back to his feet but Ass is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Ass stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ruiz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Ruiz is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ass is controlling him.
Ass wants to control from the top but Ruiz keeps moving.
Ruiz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Ruiz trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Ass shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ruiz as he avoids it easily.
Ruiz lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Ruiz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Ruiz throws a front kick aimed at Ass's knee but Ass avoids it well.
Ass avoids the head kick by Ruiz.
Ruiz throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Ruiz tries to keep at a distance but Ass has taken the fight into the clinch.
Ass tries to pull guard but Ruiz won't allow it.
Ass tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ruiz just stands there and leans against the cage.
Marco Ruiz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kick Ass.
Ass tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Ruiz breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Ass counters with a takedown into side control.

Ruiz is not content to let Ass control the position.
Ruiz is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Ass asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Ruiz throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Ruiz loads up on a big right hand but Ass slips the punch.
Ruiz wants to clinch.
Ass throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Ruiz's waist but Ruiz gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ass off to one side.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Nice body punch from Ruiz.
Ruiz throws a nice inside leg kick.
Ass showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Ruiz.
Ass bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Ass looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Ruiz is fending him off so far but Ass persists. Nope, Ruiz circles away and we're back to standing.
Ruiz swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Ruiz moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.


It looks like Kick Ass has been cut.
Ruiz scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

and Ass decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ruiz's guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ass prevents Ruiz from getting back to his feet.
Ass trying to control the position from guard on top but Ruiz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Kick Ass's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Ass circles away from the clinch attempt

and Ass counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Ruiz has his feet on Ass's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Ass blocks a leg kick.
Ruiz misses with the combination.
Ruiz darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Ruiz misses with a two punch combination.
Ruiz throws a right hand that Ass ducks under and follows up with a left that Ass also avoids with ease.
Marco Ruiz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ruiz throws a half hearted mid kick.

Ass feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ass is breathing heavily.

Ass is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Ass feints and as Ruiz raises his hands in defense, Ass changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Ruiz is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ass is controlling him.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ass changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ruiz looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Ass trying to control the action but Ruiz is working from the bottom.
Ruiz is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Ass asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Ass thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Ruiz wants to get back to his feet.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Ass.
Ruiz pushes Ass away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Ass gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Kick Ass showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Ass closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ass lands in his opponent's guard.

Ruiz pushes Ass off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ass is looking to take a break and control but Ruiz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Ruiz wants to get back to his feet but Ass drags him back down.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Ruiz looks to score with a jab to the body but Ass is just out of range.

Ruiz clinches.

so Ass counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kick Ass comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Ass has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
