PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thiago Paranhos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mikhail Romanenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paranhos kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Chop Suey. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Alexandre Firmino and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paranhos throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Romanenko takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

Paranhos throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Romanenko was covering up waiting for the punch and Paranhos finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Romanenko working a defensive guard but Paranhos manages to pass into side control anyway.
Sloppy strikes there by Paranhos.
Romanenko is trying to escape the position but Paranhos is controlling the position.
Paranhos is trying to ground and pound but Romanenko uses the momentary lack of control by Paranhos to regain half guard.

Paranhos is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Well, if Paranhos is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Romanenko is defending against the submission attempts here by Paranhos.
Paranhos is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Paranhos content to control rather than advance.
Paranhos seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Romanenko does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Romanenko wants to get back to his feet.
Paranhos moves nicely into side control.

Paranhos has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Romanenko pushes Paranhos off looking to stand but Paranhos dives back in and keeps control.
Paranhos thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Romanenko's head.
Romanenko has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Paranhos is working away from the top position though.
Paranhos has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Romanenko tries to work over Paranhos's front leg with a kick but Paranhos checks it.
Paranhos moves out of range of the body kick.
Romanenko displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Paranhos.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Thiago Paranhos. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Romanenko lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Paranhos circles away quickly and effectively.
Paranhos blocks a low kick nicely.

Romanenko fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Paranhos sprawls well initially but Romanenko persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Romanenko wants to free his trapped foot but Paranhos is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Paranhos shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Romanenko sprawls well. Romanenko wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Paranhos gets slowly back to his feet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Romanenko is looking to chop away at Paranhos's legs.

and Paranhos counters with a single leg into guard. Romanenko didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Paranhos throws a big right hand that misses.
Paranhos stands up over Romanenko, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Paranhos slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Paranhos trying to control the position from guard on top but Romanenko is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Paranhos stands and steps away. Romanenko gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Romanenko wants to stand and escape but Paranhos is having none of it.

Paranhos slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Paranhos throws a strike aimed at the side of Romanenko's head but Romanenko avoids it well.
Thiago Paranhos overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Paranhos has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Paranhos avoids the attempt from Romanenko to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Paranhos is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Paranhos thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Romanenko in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Paranhos had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Romanenko defends it easily.
Romanenko really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Paranhos. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Romanenko stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Paranhos swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Paranhos is trying to control the position but Romanenko postures up.

Paranhos loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Romanenko pulls Paranhos in close to prevent any damage.
Paranhos stops Romanenko from standing up.
Mikhail Romanenko has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Thiago Paranhos is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Paranhos wants to control from the top but Romanenko keeps moving.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Paranhos, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
