PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Spontaneous Gordon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Afonso Severo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Afonso Severo will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Spontaneous Gordon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Afonso Severo!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Emerson Jorge and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gordon closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the ropes.

Gordon manages to pull guard.
Severo stops Gordon from standing up.
Gordon keeping moving, preventing Severo from controlling successfully.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Gordon tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gordon is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Gordon manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Severo on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.

Gordon rushes Severo and pushes him back against the ropes in a clinch.

Gordon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Severo shoots in for a takedown but Gordon shows good takedown defense.
Severo looks to clinch

and Gordon moves into the clinch.
Severo leaning his opponent against the ropes.
Severo is trying to stall.

Gordon manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Severo wants to stand but Gordon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gordon is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Gordon is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Gordon trying to keep a closed guard but Severo is proving a slippery customer.
Gordon looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gordon is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Gordon wants to get back to his feet but Severo is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Gordon darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Severo gets back to full guard.
Gordon seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Gordon seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Severo for as long as he can get away with.
Gordon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Severo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Severo escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gordon gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gordon wants to pass the guard but Severo is keeping the position.
Gordon is working hard here to advance position.

Gordon thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Gordon sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Gordon pushing down on Severo's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gordon wants to stand but Severo has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Gordon decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Gordon lands a front kick.
Severo fails in his attempt to clinch.

Gordon pushes Severo up against the ropes in a clinch.
Gordon connects with a nasty looking knee right to Severo's face.
Gordon tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Gordon has hold of one of Severo's legs. Severo is fighting the takedown attempt but Gordon gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Gordon gets to his feet - Severo follows without any prompting.
Severo looks gassed!

Gordon forces Severo back against the ropes and clinches.
With the two fighters working up against the ropes, Gordon just misses with a elbow thrown towards Severo's brow.
Gordon stops a takedown attempt from Severo.

Severo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Severo misses with a takedown

and Gordon counters by moving into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spontaneous Gordon dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Severo tries to keep at a distance but Gordon has taken the fight into the clinch.
Knees in the clinch landing for Gordon.
Gordon crunches a lovely knee into Severo's ribcage.

It looks like Afonso Severo has been cut.
Gordon using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.

Gordon gets control of Severo's arms and successfully pulls guard. Gordon will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Gordon is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gordon is on top in guard.

Gordon gets to his feet. Severo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Severo is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gordon closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gordon lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Severo has momentary wrist control but Gordon slips an elbow through the middle.
Gordon is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Gordon gets to his feet. Severo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Gordon gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Gordon gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Nice elbow from Gordon.
A right hook to the body lands for Gordon.

Gordon breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Gordon closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Severo did well to prevent Gordon getting side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Still in half guard, Gordon seems content to control.

Gordon is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Severo is just riding it out for now. Gordon eventually gives up the hold.
Gordon tries to pass the half guard into mount. Severo knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Gordon frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gordon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Severo tries to hold on but Gordon pushes him away.
Gordon controlling the position easily from mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Spontaneous Gordon just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Severo tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gordon throws a head kick that misses.

Gordon moves into range and clinches up with Severo.
Gordon lands a left hand that snaps the head of Severo backwards.
Severo is trying to break the clinch but Gordon has him pressed against the ropes.
Gordon scores with a knee to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spontaneous Gordon dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Afonso Severo's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Severo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Gordon paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Spontaneous Gordon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gordon looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Severo!
Severo is in all sorts of trouble here.

Gordon is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Severo has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Gordon is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Severo can do to turn this around?

Gordon lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Severo is bucking up trying to escape but Gordon cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Severo wants to control but Gordon is having none of it.

Spontaneous Gordon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gordon has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Spontaneous Gordon just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Gordon dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Severo. That did some damage!
Severo has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Gordon.

Gordon closes the distance and pushes Severo back into the ropes.
Gordon pushes Severo back against the ropes and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Severo managing to block the knees to the body from Gordon.
Severo on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Gordon breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gordon connects with a body shot.
Gordon cracks a nice hook into Severo's ribs.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Gordon.

Gordon darts in and clinches Severo up against the ropes.
Knees in the clinch landing for Gordon.

Gordon is trying to trip Severo. He has hold of a leg but Severo is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Gordon persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Gordon slips nicely into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gordon passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Severo!

Spontaneous Gordon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that's the end of the fight!
Spontaneous Gordon showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Gordon has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
