Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Sampson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jon Tate!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Skip Squint and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body punch from Tate.
No joy there for Sampson, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Tate closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Tate keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Tate passes to side control.
Tate trying to control the position but Sampson is working away.
Sampson tries to improve position but can't.
Tate just content to control the position.
Tate looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Sampson is avoiding damage well.

Tate controls the position from side control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Tate throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Tate slows the pace down.
Tate fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Sampson avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Tate.

Tate is looking to take a break and control but Sampson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Despite being in the dominant position, Jon Tate just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Sampson misses with a takedown
and Tate counters with a nice uppercut.
Sampson tries a head kick but it misses.
Tate misses with a wild body shot.

Sampson drives through and clinches with Tate against the cage.
Tate tries to break free but Sampson pushes him back against the cage.

Sampson lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

Tate breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Tate checks the leg kick.
Sampson slips under a jab.
Sampson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Tate sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sampson somewhat.
Sampson wants to land a leg kick but Tate is out of range.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sampson takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Tate dominated that round.
That's time! Sampson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Sampson throws a head kick that misses.
Tate falls off balance throwing a combination
and Sampson counters with a thumping low kick.

Tate scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Sampson is not content to let Tate control the position.
Sampson is looking for a sweep.
Tate controlling the position from side mount.

The ground and pound from Tate seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Tate is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Sampson's shoulder. That is not cool.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Tate tries to move to mount but Sampson blocks the move with his legs.
Sampson is trying to control Tate's posture but Tate avoids it.
Tate is looking to take a break and control but Sampson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Tate in side control, just content to control the action for now.
The ground and pound from Tate seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Tate throws a strike aimed at the side of Sampson's head but Sampson avoids it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Tate cracks Sampson with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Sampson is trying to escape the position but Tate is controlling the position.
Tate misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Tate lands a few punches from side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Jon Tate showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Sampson slips a straight right by Tate.

Tate throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sampson was covering up waiting for the punch and Tate finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Tate trying to control the position from guard on top but Sampson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tate looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Sampson keeping full guard, as Tate tries to pass.

Sampson wants to control the position but Tate says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Tate takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Sampson moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Tate throws a strike but Sampson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Sampson being controlled here momentarily.
Tate utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Tate holds on and takes a little breather.
Tate tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Sampson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sampson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Sampson throws and elbow that misses. Tate uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Sampson's guard. Nice move by Tate!
Tate wants to control from the top but Sampson keeps moving.
Tate is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Tate works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Tate works his way into side control.
Steve Sampson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Tate is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
