PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brad Finnigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Geoffrey Spaulding (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Brad Finnigan !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Geoffrey Spaulding!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Finnigan lands a high kick!


It looks like Geoffrey Spaulding has been cut.
Spaulding has a takedown stuffed.
Spaulding connects with the punch.
Spaulding moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Finnigan shoots in for a takedown but Spaulding shows good takedown defense.
Finnigan misses with a looping left.
Geoffrey Spaulding seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Finnigan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Spaulding as he jumps to the side.

Finnigan rushes Spaulding and presses him up against the ropes.
Finnigan will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Spaulding up against the ropes.
Spaulding has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Finnigan avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Spaulding is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the ropes.

Finnigan turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Finnigan manages to end up in side control.
Spaulding is looking to regain half guard here but Finnigan keeps moving and retains side control.
Finnigan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Spaulding on the ground.
You can see the frustration on Spaulding's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Spaulding gets back to half guard.

Spaulding manages to get to full guard.
Spaulding manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Spaulding tries to control but Finnigan wriggling away.
Finnigan wants to control but Spaulding is having none of it.
Finnigan squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.

Spaulding stands up from mount. Strange move.
Spaulding lands with an overhand left.
Finnigan throws a half hearted mid kick.
Spaulding gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Finnigan decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Spaulding's guard.
Brad Finnigan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Geoffrey Spaulding.

Spaulding is looking for a triangle but Finnigan pushes his legs off easily.
Spaulding looks gassed!

Spaulding escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Finnigan gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Finnigan sitting in guard here, content to control.
Finnigan trying to control the position from guard on top but Spaulding is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Finnigan passes Spaulding's left leg - he's now in half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Spaulding tries to get to full guard but Finnigan has control of the leg.
Finnigan is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Spaulding!

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Spaulding tries to lock up and control but Finnigan gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Finnigan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Spaulding is looking to escape.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Spaulding is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Spaulding wants to hold on but Finnigan pushes him away.
Spaulding is looking to improve his position but Finnigan isn't that keen on the idea.
Finnigan avoids the attempt from Spaulding to control.
Finnigan controlling his opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Finnigan swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Spaulding is now in Finnigan 's guard. A big mistake from Finnigan there, giving up the dominant position!

Finnigan tries to kick Spaulding off but Spaulding keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Spaulding is working for a submission of some sort.
Finnigan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Spaulding wants to lay and pray for a moment but Finnigan keeps working.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Finnigan has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Spaulding is working away from the top position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Brad Finnigan will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Spaulding misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Finnigan closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Spaulding is trying to get back to half guard.
Finnigan slows the pace down.
Spaulding is trying to control Finnigan 's posture but Finnigan avoids it.

Spaulding can't do much from the bottom here.

Spaulding tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Finnigan wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Spaulding manages to get back to half guard.
Spaulding tries to roll over but Finnigan keeps him under control.
Finnigan not doing much here.
Finnigan seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Spaulding for as long as he can get away with.
Spaulding wants to control but Finnigan is keeping busy.
Spaulding regains full guard. Nicely done.
Spaulding is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Spaulding has his foot on Finnigan 's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Finnigan works his way back into a safe position though.

Finnigan stands and throws Spaulding's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Spaulding tries to bench press Finnigan off him but Finnigan keeps the position.

Finnigan stands up and beckons Spaulding to his feet.
Nice sprawl there from Spaulding as Finnigan shoots in.
A left and a right from Spaulding both land. Nice combination.
Finnigan misses with a few strikes there.
Spaulding keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Spaulding connects with a jab.
Spaulding fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Spaulding fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Spaulding tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Finnigan just stands there and leans against the ropes.

Finnigan lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Spaulding is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Finnigan 's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Finnigan 's back!

Spaulding is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Finnigan is defending well though. Spaulding let's go of the attempt for now.
Finnigan trying to control the action but Spaulding just sinks the hooks in.

Spaulding is persistently looking for the submission but Finnigan is defending it well.
