PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jess Shipman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mighty Mo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jess Shipman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mighty Mo!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shipman throws a head kick that misses.

Shipman gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Shipman trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Shipman throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Mo landing some decent shots from guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shipman is looking to stand up but Mo isn't so interested in that idea.

Mo gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Mo tries to clinch but Shipman is having none of it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shipman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Mo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Mo shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Shipman sprawls well. Shipman wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mo gets slowly back to his feet.
Shipman tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Mo counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mo.
Shipman tries to break free but Mo pushes him back against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mo swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Shipman's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Shipman waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Mo.
Shipman closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mo circles away.
Shipman fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Shipman throws a sloppy head kick and Mo moves out of range easily.

Mo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shipman wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Mo manages to pass to side control.

Shipman on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Shipman is refusing to be controlled, as Mo sits in half guard.
Shipman manages to get to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mo wants to stand but Shipman has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Mo trying to control the position from guard on top but Shipman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mo is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Shipman throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Shipman keeping moving, preventing Mo from controlling successfully.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Shipman napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Shipman pushes Mo away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Mo gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Shipman tries to strike from the bottom but misses.

Mo stands up and beckons Shipman to his feet.
A head kick misses from Shipman.
Mo throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shipman's waist but Shipman gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mo off to one side.
Jess Shipman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mighty Mo.
Shipman shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mo as he avoids it easily.
A combination from Shipman does no damage.

Mo shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mo trying to control the position from guard on top but Shipman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Shipman wants to get back to his feet but Mo is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Mo got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shipman has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mo has managed to get both his arms back between Shipman's legs - danger averted.
Shipman is striking but Mo is not phased and passes to half guard.
Shipman is looking to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mighty Mo dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Shipman manages to avoid it.

and Shipman counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Shipman is keen to just control but Mo is a slippery customer.
Shipman tries to stand but can't do so whilst Mo controls his leg.

Mo is trying to get back to full guard.

Shipman working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Shipman thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mo's head.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Shipman throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
A big right from Shipman misses.
Mo slips a straight right by Shipman.
Shipman attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Mo throws a head kick that misses.
Shipman tries to clinch there but Mo circles away.
Mo is looking to clinch.
Mo takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Shipman throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Mo stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Mo slaps away a takedown attempt from Shipman, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mo lands with a kick to the temple. Shipman shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Shipman takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Shipman misses with a combination
and Mo counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Shipman is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Shipman tries to clinch up but Mo circles away and keeps his distance.
Mo wants to clinch.
Shipman throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Mo counters by moving into the clinch.
A short body shot lands from Shipman as the two fighters clinch.
Mo is trying to drag Shipman to the mat but Shipman just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Shipman's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Shipman has taken the fight to the clinch.
Mo is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Shipman pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Jess Shipman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mighty Mo.

Shipman pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mo walks into a stiff left hand from Shipman.
Shipman moves in looking to clinch but Mo pushes him off.
Shipman misses with a takedown
and Mo counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Mo gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Shipman can't break the clinch.
Shipman is trying to break free.

Mo tries for a takedown. No joy.

Shipman works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Shipman has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Mo has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Mo controls Shipman momentarily but Shipman frees himself.

Shipman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Shipman wants to control from the top but Mo keeps moving.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Shipman shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jess Shipman dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


A head kick misses from Shipman.
Shipman lunges at Mo with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Mo's hand.
Mo misses with a wild combination.
Shipman shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mo but Mo pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Mo shoots in looking for a takedown. Shipman tries to sprawl out of it but Mo keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Shipman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Horrible takedown by Mo or perhaps it was just good defense by Shipman which made him look bad.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shipman stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shipman wants it to stay on the feet.
Jess Shipman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mighty Mo.
Shipman misses with a series of wild punches.
Mo misses with a head kick.
Mo blocks a head kick by Shipman.
No joy there for Mo, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Mo bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Shipman's head backwards.
Shipman just misses with a punch to the body.
Mo takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Shipman has closed the distance and engaged Mo in a clinch.
Shipman takes an elbow to the forehead.
Mo misses with a hook from the clinch.
Mo tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Shipman tries to circle away but Mo has him pinned against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Mo.
Shipman looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Shipman breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shipman throws a lazy head kick

and Mo counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mo.
Shipman is trying to force a seperation but Mo has the dominant position.

Mo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mo shoots in looking for a takedown. Shipman tries to sprawl out of it but Mo keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Shipman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Shipman looks to land a combination but Mo avoids it well.

Shipman knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mo on the ground.

Mo is concentrating on defense, preventing Shipman from advancing position.

Mo pushes Shipman off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Shipman is looking to clinch.
Shipman tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mo paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Mo darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Shipman throws a looping overhand right but Mo ducks down to avoid it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jess Shipman showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Shipman has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
