PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gavin Drake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ry Stone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Drake comes to the cage accompanied by Beamer, Benz, or Bentley by Lloyd Banks. Stone has chosen Mersey Paradise as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gavin Drake!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ry Stone!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Drake keeps the fight on the outside.
Drake lets loose with a powerful body kick. Stone will feel that in the morning.
Stone will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Drake scores with a head kick.
Drake swats away the attempt to clinch by Stone.
Stone throws a hook but Drake avoids it easily.

Drake looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stone!

Drake is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Stone is surviving well by controlling Drake's body position as best he can.

Drake is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Stone has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Stone!

Drake is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stone defends well.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Drake escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Stone gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Drake pulls Stone in close to his closed guard and prevents Stone from doing any damage or advancing position.
Drake is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Drake has Stone pulled in close to control his posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Stone decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Drake gets a takedown into half guard.
Drake landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Drake is working for a submission of some sort.
Stone is trying to stand back up but Drake is controlling him
Drake trying to control the action but Stone is working from the bottom.
Drake trying to pass the guard but Stone defending well.
Stone looks like he's trying to stand up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Drake wants to control but Stone is keeping him busy.
Stone pushes Drake off but Drake dives into side control.

Drake is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Stone knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Drake is breathing heavily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Stone rushes Drake and presses him up against the cage.
Stone managing to block the knees to the body from Drake.

Stone's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gavin Drake dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Stone tries to land a body kick

and Drake counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Stone scores with a hook to the body.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Stone misses with a hook to the ribs.
Drake drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Drake misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Stone.
Stone wants to break the clinch but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Drake tries for a takedown but Stone manages to get underhooks.
Stone lands a nice shot to the body.
Drake is trying to drag Stone to the mat but Stone just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gavin Drake. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Stone decides to pull guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Drake tries to free his leg and advance position but Stone is retaining full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Stone is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Drake drops back, looking for a kneebar! Stone looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Stone looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Stone!

Stone has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Drake fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Stone sprawls well initially but Drake persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Drake stops Stone from getting back to his feet.
Stone tries to roll over but Drake keeps him under control.
Stone is trying to stand.

Drake is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Stone doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Drake.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Drake is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Stone is trying to stand back up but Drake is controlling him

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Drake is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Stone defends it well.
Drake is trying to control the action in half guard but Stone is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Stone tries for a takedown but Drake circles away easily
and Drake counters with a head kick.
Drake tries a head kick but it misses.
Drake takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Stone goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Gavin Drake is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Stone is looking to clinch but Drake is avoiding it.
Stone fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Drake avoids it really well and circles away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Stone.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ry Stone showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Stone shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Drake tries to hold on but Stone postures up.
Drake can't escape the position.

Stone stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Stone pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Stone shoots in but Drake avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Ry Stone seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Stone throws a push kick but Drake slaps the foot to one side.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Drake moves out of range of the leg kick from Stone.
Drake fails with an attempt to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Drake throws a head kick that half lands.
Drake tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Stone is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Stone is looking to clinch but Drake is avoiding it.
Stone shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Drake pinned against the cage. Drake gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Drake swats away the attempt to clinch by Stone.

Stone takes the fight into the clinch.
A right hook to the body lands for Stone.

Drake escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stone misses with a takedown attempt - Drake sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Gavin Drake has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ry Stone.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Drake lands a head kick!

Drake decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Stone scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Drake manages to mount him!
Drake trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Drake working away from the top, dropping strikes.

Drake jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Stone is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Stone and Drake has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Drake is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Stone has escaped the position, nice work there.

Stone bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

Stone shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Drake is trying to defend but Stone finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Drake is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Stone decides to stand and escape the position.
Stone tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Drake swivels and escapes.

Stone feints and as Drake raises his hands in defense, Stone changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Drake wants to sweep but no luck.

Drake is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Stone is aware though and is defending well.
Stone would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ry Stone comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Stone has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
