PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Leon Pauli (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randy Carwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Randy Carwin was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leon Pauli!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Randy Carwin!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Stewart Dunkirk and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carwin closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pauli circles away.
Carwin tries to clinch up.
Pauli displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Carwin.

Pauli darts in and clinches Carwin up against the cage.
Carwin is trying to wear down his opponent with knees to the body.
Carwin is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Pauli pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Leon Pauli has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Randy Carwin.
Carwin has Pauli pushed against the cage.
Pauli will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Carwin up against the cage.

Carwin pulls guard successfully.
Carwin is trying to hold Pauli in close to prevent damage but Pauli has managed to pass into half guard.
Pauli wants to control but Carwin is keeping him busy.
Well, if Pauli is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Carwin can do anything to dispel that myth.

Pauli decides to return to a standing position.
Pauli with a poor takedown

and Carwin counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pauli won't be happy with that.

Carwin tries for a kimura but Pauli is defending well.
Pauli is not content to let Carwin control the position.
Carwin really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pauli. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Pauli is working to avoid the ground and pound but Carwin connects with a decent elbow.
Pauli is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Pauli wants to control but Carwin is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Carwin looks to land a strike but Pauli avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Pauli keeping moving, preventing Carwin from controlling successfully.
Carwin looks gassed!
Carwin not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Pauli is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Pauli manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Carwin is squirming around, avoiding Pauli's attempts to control the action.

Carwin is trying to reverse the position but instead Pauli has taken his back - oops!
Carwin is keeping busy.
Pauli could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Pauli gets his hands free as Carwin looks to control.

Pauli is persistently looking for the submission but Carwin is defending it well.
Pauli controls the action.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Pauli controlling well, preventing Carwin from escaping the position.
Carwin looking very determined here, making life difficult for Pauli.
Pauli scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Randy Carwin will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Pauli misses with a wild body shot.
Nice jab there from Pauli.

Pauli gets a takedown into half guard.
Pauli content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Pauli stalling away here and it's allowed Carwin to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Carwin wants to sweep here but Pauli controlling him for the moment.

Pauli trying to control the position from guard on top but Carwin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Carwin is wriggling around but Pauli manages to pass to half guard.
Carwin is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Pauli scores with a couple of nice shots.
Pauli throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pauli throwing shots but Carwin is blocking nicely.

Pauli is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pauli wants to control but Carwin is keeping him busy.
Carwin is concentrating on defense, preventing Pauli from advancing position.

Pauli seems to be working for a kimura but Carwin defends the submission attempt.
Carwin gets back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pauli trying to control the position from guard on top but Carwin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pauli prevents Carwin from getting back to his feet.
Pauli stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Carwin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Carwin looking for a sweep. Not yet Carwin, not yet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Carwin bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pauli's guard.
Carwin keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Pauli's head.
Carwin trying to control but Pauli is working from the bottom.
Carwin throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Pauli working for a triangle but Carwin defends it easily.
Carwin postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Carwin won't allow Pauli to sweep him here.
Pauli keeping moving, preventing Carwin from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leon Pauli dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Pauli stuffs the takedown attempt from Carwin. Carwin gets slowly back to his feet.
Carwin shoots in but no luck this time.
Pauli scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Leon Pauli seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pauli closes the distance and clinches.
Pauli drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Pauli pulls guard successfully.
Carwin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Pauli looking to control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Carwin has gone for a leg lock! Pauli slips out almost immediately though and dives into Carwin's guard.
Carwin is looking to stand up but Pauli isn't so interested in that idea.

Pauli controlling from the top position.
Pauli has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Carwin controls Pauli momentarily but Pauli frees himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Pauli slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Carwin has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pauli throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Carwin working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Pauli has passed into half guard!
Pauli is looking to take a break and control but Carwin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pauli looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pauli trying to pass the guard but Carwin defending well.
Carwin keeping hold of Pauli's head, controlling as best he can.
Pauli seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

And that's the end of the fight!
Leon Pauli showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Pauli has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
