PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Julio Patino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodrigo Tavares (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Patino!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Tavares!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Alexandre Firmino and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tavares tries to clinch there but Patino circles away.

Patino moves into the clinch successfully.

Patino lands a takedown into guard.
Patino not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Patino will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Patino stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Tavares swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Patino is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Tavares manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Patino manages to get himself to full guard.

Patino manages to escape and get back to his feet.

A combination from Tavares does no damage.

Patino fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Tavares sprawls well initially but Patino persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Patino content to control rather than advance.
Patino has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Tavares is refusing to be controlled, as Patino sits in half guard.

Tavares tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Patino has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's time! Patino's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Patino closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Tavares did well to prevent Patino getting side control.
Tavares looks like he's trying to stand up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Patino in particular looking to stall.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Julio Patino just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Patino wants to clinch up but Tavares keeps it at a distance.

Patino shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Tavares's guard.
Patino controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Patino has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Tavares can do anything to dispel that myth.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Patino works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Patino moves into full mount! Tavares won't be happy about that!

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Patino throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Tavares sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Tavares tries to keep at a distance but Patino has taken the fight into the clinch.

Patino has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Tavares clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.
Patino is landing with strikes from the back.
Patino controlling well, preventing Tavares from escaping the position.

Tavares looking very determined here, making life difficult for Patino.
Julio Patino overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Tavares is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Patino gets his way!

Tavares gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Patino to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Tavares is looking for a triangle here but Patino uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Tavares takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Patino is looking to take a break and control but Tavares is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
A lull in the action here as Patino stalls from top position.

Well Patino has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
