Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Paul Grady! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Colm Liddel! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Anthony Taglia and Reed Andrews.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Grady rushes Liddel and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Liddel manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Liddel working for a triangle but Grady defends it easily.
Liddel looking to control.
Grady wants to control from the top but Liddel keeps moving. Liddel is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Liddel is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Liddel trying to keep a closed guard but Grady is proving a slippery customer.
Grady sitting in guard, not really doing much. Grady wants to stand but Liddel is controlling his posture from full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Grady slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Grady wants to control from the top but Liddel keeps moving. Grady is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Liddel is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Liddel kicks Grady off and gets to his feet. Grady tries to close the distance and clinch up but Liddel swats him away and circles back towards the center. Grady tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Grady tries to clinch up. Grady fails with an attempt to clinch.
Grady throws a body punch but Liddel moves out of range. Grady tries to close the distance and clinch but Liddel swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Liddel lands with a nice body punch. Grady tries to clinch but Liddel is having none of it. Grady shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Liddel pinned against the cage. Liddel gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Grady is breathing heavily. Grady tries to clinch there but Liddel circles away.
Grady instigates a clinch. Grady looking for a takedown. Liddel breaks from the clinch.
Liddel throws a head kick that half lands.
Liddel blocks a jab. Liddel gets a takedown into half guard. Still in half guard, Liddel seems content to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Grady keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Liddel working the head and body with strikes. Grady trying to control from the bottom.
Liddel tries to stand and escape but Grady is controlling the position. Grady on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Grady tries to get out of the position. Liddel is trying to control the action in half guard but Grady is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Liddel controlling the action here. Liddel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Grady is just riding it out for now. Liddel eventually gives up the hold. Liddel landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Grady is staying active underneath Liddel, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Grady wants to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Liddel has a takedown stuffed. A punch combination from Grady misses. Grady fails with the takedown so Liddel counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul Grady. That's going to take a lot out of him. Liddel not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Grady keeping full guard, as Liddel tries to pass. Grady is trying to hold Liddel in close to prevent damage but Liddel has managed to pass into half guard.
Liddel slows the pace down in half guard. Grady wants to get back to his feet.
Liddel trying to pass the guard but Grady defending well. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Colm Liddel dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Liddel lands with a slapping head kick.
Grady is rocked!
It looks like Paul Grady has been cut. Paul Grady seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Liddel moves into range and clinches up with Grady. Oh Grady is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Knees in the clinch landing for Liddel.
Liddel scores with a hook to the body. Liddel has Grady pressed against the cage.
Liddel jumps guard.
Grady has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Liddel avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Liddel has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Grady should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Liddel has tightened it up now! Grady should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
