PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Laurel Aitken (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Erico Plaza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Aitken might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Two Joints- Sublime. Erico Plaza is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Laurel Aitken!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Erico Plaza!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Stewart Dunkirk and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aitken lands a head shot.


It looks like Erico Plaza has been cut.
Aitken will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Aitken swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Aitken throws a hook but Plaza avoids it easily.
Plaza shoots for a takedown but Aitken saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Aitken takes a swing at Plaza's ribcage but misses.
Aitken throws a low kick, looking for Plaza's leg but Plaza calmly moves out of range.

Plaza feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Plaza is pushing down on Aitken's leg trying to pass to half guard. Aitken is fighting to maintain full guard but Plaza has managed to sneak the leg through.
Aitken is looking to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Aitken is working hard here to advance position.
Plaza wants to pass to mount but Aitken is defending the position.
Aitken is in trouble now - Plaza has advanced to mount!

Aitken wants to hold on but Plaza pushes him away.
Plaza cracks Aitken with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Plaza trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Plaza jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Aitken manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Aitken is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Plaza tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Plaza has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Aitken is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Plaza's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Plaza prevents Aitken from improving his position.

Plaza is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Plaza is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Plaza seems to be working for a kimura but Aitken defends the submission attempt.
Aitken is staying active underneath Plaza, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Plaza drops his hands momentarily and Aitken takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

Aitken stuffs the takedown.
Plaza shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Laurel Aitken has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Erico Plaza.
Plaza takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Aitken looks to throw the jab but Plaza is out of range.
Plaza ducks under a wild hook from Aitken.
Plaza closes the distance and clinches up with Aitken, looking for a takedown. Plaza pushes Aitken against the cage but Aitken circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Laurel Aitken seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Aitken tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Plaza shoots in and drives through. Aitken sprawls well.
Aitken throws a right and a left that Plaza avoids nicely.
Plaza misses with a low kick.
Laurel Aitken is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Aitken slaps away a takedown attempt from Plaza, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Aitken misses with a series of wild punches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



A jab-cross combination lands for Aitken and sends Plaza crashing to the mat! Aitken follows him down to the mat - Plaza regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Aitken is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Plaza is trying to get back to full guard.
Plaza is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Aitken's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Aitken's back!

Plaza has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Aitken has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Plaza misses with a punch to the head.
Aitken breaks Plaza's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Aitken passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Aitken decides to stand up, so the ref orders Plaza to his feet.
Aitken looks to throw the jab but Plaza is out of range.
Plaza avoids a punch combination nicely.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Plaza.

Aitken struggling a bit here.
Aitken takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Aitken is looking for a sweep.
Plaza moves into full mount!

Plaza looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Aitken is looking to improve his position but Plaza isn't that keen on the idea.
Aitken is controlling an arm, preventing Plaza from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Aitken is squirming around, avoiding Plaza's attempts to control the action.
Aitken is wriggling around trying to escape.
Aitken has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.

Plaza looking for the RNC.
Will Plaza go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Aitken trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Plaza thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Aitken's head.

That was a close second round but I would say that Laurel Aitken will probably get the nod.

Aitken catches Plaza with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Aitken thows a left - swing and a miss!

Plaza bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Aitken wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Aitken is not content to let Plaza control the position.

Plaza tries for a kimura but Aitken is defending well.
Aitken is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Plaza working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Aitken is trying to control Plaza's posture but Plaza avoids it.
Plaza wants to control but Aitken is keeping him busy.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Plaza slips a straight right by Aitken.
Aitken keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Plaza takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Aitken misses with a jab, cross combination.
Plaza keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Plaza shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Aitken napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Plaza looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Aitken isn't going anywhere.

Plaza is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Aitken knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Aitken tries to bench press Plaza off him but Plaza keeps the position.
Aitken wants to control but Plaza postures up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Plaza tries to move into full mount but can't pass Aitken's legs.
Plaza is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Aitken!
Aitken misses with a low kick.

Plaza has Aitken up against the cage in a clinch.
Plaza using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Aitken has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Plaza tightens his grip and picks Aitken up, before dumping him to the ground. Aitken manages to land in guard.
Aitken keeping moving, preventing Plaza from controlling successfully.
Plaza tries to free his leg and advance position but Aitken is retaining full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Erico Plaza comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Aitken has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
