PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ryan Griffen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tyler Meier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meier is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Cant be touched. The key to victory for Ryan Griffen has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ryan Griffen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tyler Meier!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, David Schapiro and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Meier as he jumps to the side.
Griffen throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Griffen is looking to clinch.
Meier blocks the body kick.
Meier lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Griffen circles away quickly and effectively.

Meier clinches with his opponent.

Meier turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Meier manages to end up in side control.
Meier connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Griffen some visible discomfort.
Griffen is trying to improve his position.

Griffen looking for a sweep but Meier has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Meier scoring with strikes but Griffen is staying in there.
Meier fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Meier has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Griffen's face.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Griffen tries to lock up and control but Meier gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Meier has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

BOOM! Meier connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Griffen is desperately trying to improve his position but Meier has a good base and remains in mount.

Griffen slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Meier working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Griffen is not content to let Meier control the position.
Meier slips a nice elbow through Griffen's hands, connecting with Griffen's forehead.
Meier working over Griffen with some ground and pound. Griffen looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Meier lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Griffen is looking to escape.
Meier is trying to control. Griffen wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Meier is nestled in close to Griffen, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Meier is keen to just control but Griffen is a slippery customer.
Meier takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A looping hook to the body misses from Griffen. Meier does a little dance to reset his feet.
Ryan Griffen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Griffen throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Griffen is trying to break the clinch but Meier has him pressed against the cage.

Griffen jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Meier walks away with a smile on his face. Griffen gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Meier in particular looking to stall.
Meier takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Meier seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Meier connects with a nice short shot to Griffen's temple.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Griffen wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Meier has him pressed against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Griffen's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Meier turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Meier postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Griffen tries to buck Meier off but Meier is having none of it.

Griffen wants to get back to his feet.
