PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Dan Coen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shawn Hawkings (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dan Coen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 1, fighting out of New York, Shawn Hawkings!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Jorge Garcia and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hawkings avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Hawkings works over Coen's head and body with a nice combination.
Hawkings connects with the punch.
Hawkings finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Hawkings closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Hawkings motions for Coen to come forward. Hawkings throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Hawkings takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Coen tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hawkings paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Coen tries to bum rush Hawkings with a series of wild strikes but Hawkings uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Coen counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Coen.

Hawkings gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Hawkings is in close to Coen's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Hawkings in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Coen keeping moving, preventing Hawkings from controlling successfully.
Hawkings is looking to stand up but Coen won't let him.

Coen lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Hawkings!
Hawkings squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Hawkings is trying to escape the mount.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hawkings wants to try and get back to his feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Coen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Hawkings avoids a series of strikes thrown by Coen.
Hawkings is in all sorts of trouble here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawkings tries to hold on but Coen pushes him away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Hawkings is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Coen postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Hawkings looks a forlorn figure.
Coen can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Hawkings is looking to escape.

Hawkings wants to hold on but Coen pushes him away.

Coen closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hawkings circles away.
Coen takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Coen ducks under a wild hook from Hawkings.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hawkings lands a nice looking kick to the body. Coen takes a step back to recover.
Coen tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Hawkings lunges at Coen with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Coen's hand.

Coen displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hawkings.
Shawn Hawkings seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Good leg kick by Hawkings there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Hawkings misses with a double jab
and Coen makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Coen throws a chopping leg kick but Hawkings manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

and Coen moves into the clinch.

Coen looking to throw knees to the head but Hawkings is blocking nicely.
Coen misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Hawkings.
Coen is working for takedown but Hawkings is calmly controlling the position for now.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dan Coen. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Coen fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Hawkings has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Coen clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Oooh a big shot gets through from Hawkings. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!

Coen wants to clinch up but Hawkings keeps it at a distance.

Hawkings looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Hawkings lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

Hawkings closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Coen to the mat! Coen manages to get full guard.
Hawkings wants to get up but he can't break Coen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Shawn Hawkings showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Coen closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Coen is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Hawkings is defending well for now.

Hawkings has hold of one of Coen's legs. Coen is fighting the takedown attempt but Hawkings gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Coen prevents Hawkings from getting back to his feet.
Hawkings takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Hawkings is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
