PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Adam Wells (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brendan Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wells's entrance music is Muse - Supermassive Black Hole. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Adam Wells!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Brendan Khan!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, James Ackerman and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Khan shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Wells manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Wells preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Khan throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Wells working a defensive guard but Khan manages to pass into side control anyway.
Wells is looking to reverse the position.
You can see the frustration on Wells's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Khan working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Khan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Khan connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Wells some visible discomfort.

Khan is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Wells will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Wells tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Khan wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Khan remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Wells is pushing Khan's head away, looking to escape. Khan manages to hold on to the position though.

and Wells counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Wells throws a nice looking combination but Khan bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Wells wants to clinch up but Khan keeps it at a distance.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

and Khan counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Wells's guard now.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Khan accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Khan controls from within his opponent's guard.
Let's hope that Khan has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Wells is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Khan wants to control from the top but Wells keeps moving.
Wells on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Wells tries to get out of the position.
Khan wants to pass the guard but Wells is keeping the position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Khan content to stall in guard here.
Wells knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Khan on the ground.

Despite being in the dominant position, Brendan Khan just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wells fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Khan manages to avoid it.
Khan misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
No luck for Khan with that takedown attempt.

Khan shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Khan was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Wells holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Khan tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Brendan Khan has got the better of the ground game so far.

Wells is wriggling around trying to escape.
Khan is landing with some decent strikes but Wells is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Khan breaks from Wells's wrist control and lands an elbow.
A nice elbow there by Khan.

Wells is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Khan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Brendan Khan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Wells's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Khan scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Khan shoots in looking for a takedown. Wells tries to sprawl out of it but Khan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wells manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

and Khan counters with a single leg into guard. Wells didn't expect that.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Khan tries to close the distance and clinch up but Wells swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Horrible takedown by Khan or perhaps it was just good defense by Wells which made him look bad.
Khan is trying hard to land a takedown here. Wells sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Adam Wells has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brendan Khan.

Khan tries to bum rush Wells with a series of wild strikes but Wells uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Khan makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Wells throws out a loose jab but Khan uses good head movement to avoid it.
Wells throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Wells wants to clinch up but Khan keeps it at a distance.

and Khan counters with a three punch combo that has Wells backing up. Wells nods at Khan to acknowledge the strikes.
Wells missing with a left hand there. Khan was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Wells closes the distance and clinches up with Khan, looking for a takedown. Wells pushes Khan against the cage but Khan circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wells bucks up and tries to throw Khan off but instead Khan has got his back!

Wells looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Wells is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Khan gets his way!

I really don't envy Wells right now.
Khan is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Khan cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Wells has left one of his arms exposed and Khan doesn't need a second invitation. He's isolated it and locked on a tight armbar. Wells screams and taps out, obviously in a lot of pain. Hopefully there isn't permanent damage to that arm.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:41 of round 4, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Brendan Khan!
