PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Henry Katama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Urijah Samuels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Katama comes to the cage accompanied by Fuel. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Henry Katama!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Urijah Samuels!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Daniel Cesar and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Samuels shoots in for a takedown but Katama shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Katama feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Samuels wants to sweep here but Katama controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Katama trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Katama won't allow Samuels to sweep him here.
Samuels is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Katama looks like he's trying to stand up.

Samuels is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Katama has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are battling for position here. Katama manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Samuels got a little sloppy there for a moment and Katama has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Samuels has managed to get both his arms back between Katama's legs - danger averted.

Samuels drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Katama manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Samuels has Katama in his guard.

Samuels looking for a sweep. Not yet Samuels, not yet.
Samuels pulls Katama in close to prevent any damage.
Katama wants to get up but he can't break Samuels's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Katama has gone for a leg lock! Samuels slips out almost immediately though and dives into Katama's guard.

Samuels postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Katama is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Samuels, into his guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Samuels pulls Katama in close to prevent any damage.
Samuels trying to keep a closed guard but Katama is proving a slippery customer.

Samuels is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Samuels gets the takedown into side control.
Katama manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Katama tries to get to full guard but Samuels has control of the leg.
Katama moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Samuels drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Katama manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Samuels has Katama in his guard.

Katama is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Samuels is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Samuels has escaped and now he's on top!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Henry Katama will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Samuels closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Samuels lands in his opponent's guard.

Samuels drops back looking for a leg! Katama is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Katama manages to kick Samuels off! Samuels jumps back into Katama's guard.
Katama lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Samuels!
Samuels is in all sorts of trouble here.
Katama looking to control but Samuels is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Katama prevents Samuels from getting the reversal.

Katama can't control as he wanted to and Samuels manages to get the fight back to his half guard.

Katama wants to work for an arm triangle but Samuels is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Samuels is trying to get back to full guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Samuels counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Katama's guard now.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Samuels drops back looking for a leg! Katama is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Katama manages to kick Samuels off! Samuels jumps back into Katama's guard.
Urijah Samuels has got the better of the ground game so far.
Katama manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Samuels is trying to escape the mount.

Katama throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Samuels wants to control but Katama is having none of it.

Katama is controlling this nicely and is looking to make no mistakes. Samuels is trying to wiggle out of this horrible position. Samuels flips to his side and attempts to get a leg in for half guard. Katama anticipates the leg and manages to get behind Samuels and secures both hooks! This could be bad! Katama slips an arm under Samuels chin and tries to position for a rear naked choke. Katama has worked the choke in now and it looks tight. Katama is squeezing on Samuels like an anaconda would it's prey. Samuels fails to tap and has fallen unconscious! We've got ourselves a winner by way of a rear naked choke!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:20 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Henry Katama!
