Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, JJ Steel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billy Thornton! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Anthony Taglia and John Kavanagh.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Steel will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Thornton scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Thornton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Steel keeps working. Steel is looking to escape. Thornton lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Steel is trying to stand up here but Thornton is controlling him well. It looks like Thornton is going to stand back up.
Steel looks like he's trying to stand up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steel is looking to control Thornton's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Steel avoid being mounted? Steel is trying to stand up here but Thornton is controlling him well. Thornton thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Steel blocking the ground and pound attempt from Thornton. Thornton thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Steel's head.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Thornton fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Steel sprawls well initially but Thornton persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Thornton seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Steel does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Steel trying to control here.
Steel is looking for a sweep. Thornton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Ground and pound from Thornton. Thornton wants to pass the guard but Steel is defending well. Steel blocking the ground and pound attempt from Thornton. The referee calls for the fighters to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Steel won't allow Thornton to pass to mount. Thornton wants to take a breather but Steel is having none of it. Thornton is pressing down on Steel's thigh, looking to free his foot. Steel is holding on for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Thornton not landing any meaningful shots this time. Steel tries to kick Thornton off but Thornton keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Thornton pushes Steel up against the cage in a clinch. Steel tries to pull guard but Thornton holds him up against the cage and eventually Steel drops back down to his feet.
Thornton manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Thornton pulls Steel in to control the position. Steel trying to control but Thornton is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Billy Thornton dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Thornton drives through and clinches with Steel against the cage.
Steel could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Thornton stalls. Thornton has picked Steel up - he's going for a ride! Thornton dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Thornton seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Steel does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Thornton wants to free his trapped foot but Steel is holding on for dear life with his legs. Steel moves into full guard.
Thornton wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steel can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Thornton controls the pace. Thornton working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Thornton in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Thornton has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Steel is proving hard to escape from. Thornton trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Steel is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Steel keeping full guard, as Thornton tries to pass.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Thornton closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Thornton content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Steel takes a knee right on the jaw!
It looks like JJ Steel has been cut. Thornton pulls guard successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Thornton pulls Steel in close to prevent any damage. Thornton working a defensive guard but Steel passes into half guard.
Steel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Thornton does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Thornton trying to control here.
Thornton keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Let's hope that Thornton has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Thornton is not content to let Steel control the position. Thornton won't allow Steel to pass to mount. Thornton tries to roll over but Steel keeps him under control. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Billy Thornton showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on JJ Steel's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Thornton takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Thornton looks to land a strike but Steel avoids it nicely and regains full guard. Thornton wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving. Thornton sitting in guard doing not very much at all here. Steel doesn't need a second invitation though! He's locked up a guillotine and he's squeezing tight! That is tiiiiiiiiight! Thornton paying the price for stalling here - he's pushing hard on the arm trying to free himself but it's no use! He's tapped! WOW, quick submission from Steel - great work!
