PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Warden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vladimir Smirnov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jacob Warden!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vladimir Smirnov!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Fedor Mirinova and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smirnov changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Warden looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Warden is trying to control Smirnov's posture but Smirnov avoids it.
Warden takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Smirnov has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Smirnov remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Warden tries to buck Smirnov off but Smirnov is having none of it.

Smirnov tries to score with some ground and pound. Warden controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Smirnov decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Warden has managed to clinch.
Smirnov tries for a takedown. No joy.
Smirnov looks gassed!

Warden drags the fight down to the ground.
Warden controls Smirnov momentarily but Smirnov frees himself.
Warden keeping moving, preventing Smirnov from controlling successfully.
Smirnov cracks Warden with a solid left hand.
Warden looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Warden working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smirnov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smirnov manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Warden escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smirnov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Warden is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Smirnov throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Warden works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Smirnov landing some decent shots from guard.
Warden bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smirnov's guard.
Smirnov is pulling down on Warden's head. It's preventing any offense from Warden, at least for the moment.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smirnov can do anything to dispel that myth.
Warden stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smirnov swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Warden won't allow Smirnov to sweep him here.
Warden has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Smirnov is proving hard to escape from.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Warden decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Warden is working for a submission of some sort.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Vladimir Smirnov will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Smirnov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Warden avoids it really well and circles away.
Smirnov is trying hard to land a takedown here. Warden sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Warden is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smirnov doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Warden.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smirnov keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smirnov is looking to improve his position.
It looks like Warden is going to stand back up.
Warden prevents Smirnov from standing back up.
Warden wants to stand up but Smirnov has a hold of him and won't allow it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smirnov wants to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Warden fails with an attempt to clinch.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Warden.

Warden stands up.

Smirnov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Smirnov lands in his opponent's guard.

Warden is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Warden goes for a takedown in the clinch but Smirnov prevents it.

Smirnov is trying to trip Warden. He has hold of a leg but Warden is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Smirnov persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Warden pushes Smirnov off and gets back to his feet.

Warden bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Smirnov is looking to reverse the position.
Smirnov avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Warden.
Warden looks up at the clock and then as Smirnov takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Warden smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Warden wants to control but Smirnov is keeping him busy.

Warden thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jacob Warden dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Smirnov misses with a jab, cross combination.

Smirnov closes the distance and pushes Warden back into the cage.

Warden changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Smirnov fights it off and pushes away nicely.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Warden wants to control from the top but Smirnov keeps moving.

Warden avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Warden decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smirnov, up you get!
Jacob Warden is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Warden shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Warden would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Smirnov looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Warden passes into side control.
Smirnov sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Warden throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Smirnov is trying to stand up here but Warden is controlling him well.
Warden frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Smirnov wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Warden.

Smirnov in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Smirnov is desperately trying to improve his position but Warden has a good base and remains in mount.
Smirnov takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Smirnov bucks Warden off and manages to get back to his feet!
Warden wants to land a leg kick but Smirnov is out of range.
Warden throws a sloppy head kick and Smirnov moves out of range easily.
Warden tries to clinch up but Smirnov circles away and keeps his distance.

Smirnov shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Warden manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jacob Warden.
Well Warden has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
