Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ikaika Kalani!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, DJ Penn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn scores a takedown into full mount!
Penn prevents Kalani from getting the reversal.

Penn is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Kalani to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kalani shrugs it off.

Penn jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Kalani is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Kalani and Penn has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Kalani sneaks back into half guard.

Penn is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Kalani tries to roll over but Penn keeps him under control.

Kalani is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily.

Penn is working for a submission of some sort.
Kalani pushes Penn off looking to stand but Penn dives back in and keeps control.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Kalani pushes Penn off and gets back to his feet.
Kalani tries to clinch there but Penn circles away.

Kalani rushes Penn and presses him up against the cage.

Kalani escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Kalani throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Penn.
Kalani misses with a two punch combination.

Kalani has managed to clinch.
Penn is trying to drag Kalani to the mat but Kalani just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Kalani's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Penn shoots in but no luck this time.
Kalani scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.


It looks like DJ Penn has been cut.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kalani.

Kalani closes the distance and pushes Penn back into the cage.

Kalani pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
DJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Penn looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Kalani!
Kalani tries to reverse the position but Penn maintains control.
Kalani is breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kalani regains half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Penn is trying to work for a kimura but Kalani is defending well.
The fighters are battling for position here. Kalani manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Kalani escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Penn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kalani is on top in guard.

Kalani thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Penn looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Kalani puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kalani is pressing down on Penn's thigh, looking to free his foot. Penn is holding on for now.

Penn is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Kalani pulls his head out easily.

Penn actively working from the bottom here.

Kalani is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Penn defends it well.

Penn looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Kalani passes the guard and advances to mount!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Penn is working to get back to half guard.

Penn is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Kalani locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Penn is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ikaika Kalani!
