PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Black Pride (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jakob Van Tripp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jakob Van Tripp was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Black Pride!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jakob Van Tripp!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Gregory Folan and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tripp closes the distance and clinches up with Pride, looking for a takedown. Tripp pushes Pride against the cage but Pride circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Tripp closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Pride did well to prevent Tripp getting side control.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Tripp in particular looking to stall.
It looks like Tripp is going to stand back up.
Tripp is keen to just control but Pride is a slippery customer.

Tripp decides to stand up.
Pride tries to clinch there but Tripp circles away.

Pride changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Tripp looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
You can see the frustration on Tripp's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The strikes coming from Pride are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Tripp gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Tripp has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pride is working away from the top position though.
Pride thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Tripp's head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nice strikes from Pride there.
Tripp slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Pride scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Pride looking to sit in guard and control but Tripp gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Tripp is in close to Pride's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Pride working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tripp doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tripp manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Pride utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Tripp is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pride looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tripp is one step ahead there.
Pride being controlled here, momentarily.

Let's hope that Tripp has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Tripp wants to control from the top but Pride keeps moving.

Pride pushes Tripp off and scrambles back to his feet.
Pride is breathing heavily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Tripp lands with a slapping head kick.

Tripp shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pride napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Pride is trying to buck Tripp off.
Pride parries the strikes from Tripp easily there. Tripp is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Pride to escape.
Pride really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Tripp lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Tripp slows the pace down.
Tripp scoring with punches and elbows.
Pride gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jakob Van Tripp dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Tripp scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Tripp wants to free his trapped foot but Pride is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Tripp is looking for a kimura but Pride is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Tripp to get the leverage.
Tripp slows the pace down in half guard.
Tripp wants to stand up but Pride has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Pride wants to get back to his feet.

Tripp decides to return to a standing position.
Pride has his takedown stuffed

and Tripp counters with a single leg into guard. Pride didn't expect that.
Tripp is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pride working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Tripp.
Pride wants to get back to his feet but Tripp is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Jakob Van Tripp has got the better of the ground game so far.
Tripp's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Despite being in the dominant position, Jakob Van Tripp just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Tripp fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Tripp smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Tripp dives in and grabs Pride's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pride pushes down on Tripp's head and hops out.

Tripp gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pride to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Tripp is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pride is aware though and is defending well.
Pride scoring with some ground and pound.

Tripp working for a triangle but Pride defends it easily.

Tripp looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Pride stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Tripp gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Tripp manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pride manages to get himself to full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pride keeping moving, preventing Tripp from controlling successfully.
Tripp won't allow Pride to get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Tripp controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jakob Van Tripp showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Tripp shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pride napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Pride tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Tripp wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
What's Pride going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Tripp wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pride keeps working.
The ground and pound from Tripp seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Tripp content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Pride is not content to let Tripp control the position.

Tripp decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Pride tries for a takedown but Tripp circles away easily

and Tripp counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Pride's guard now.
Tripp's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Tripp trying to control but Pride is working from the bottom.
Tripp stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pride swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pride controlling the position.
Pride will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Tripp slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Tripp won't allow Pride to sweep him here.
Tripp wants to control from the top but Pride keeps moving.
Tripp prevents Pride from getting back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Tripp scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Tripp lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Tripp takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Tripp trying to control from half guard but Pride is working away.
Pride is looking to control Tripp's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Pride avoid being mounted?
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pride is trying to get back to full guard.

Tripp looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Tripp is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Tripp gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Jakob Van Tripp is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
A punch combination from Pride misses.
Black Pride has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Black Pride seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Tripp drives through with a takedown into guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jakob Van Tripp comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Tripp has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
