PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matt Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Patariki Tipene (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tipene has chosen Pantera - Domination as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Matt Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Patariki Tipene!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Tipene tries for a takedown but Brown manages to get underhooks.
Brown wants a takedown but no success here.

Brown has hold of one of Tipene's legs. Tipene is fighting the takedown attempt but Brown gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Brown postures up.

Brown avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Tipene keeping moving, preventing Brown from controlling successfully.

Tipene is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Brown is aware though and is defending well.
Tipene throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Brown trying to control but Tipene is working from the bottom.
Brown throws a big right hand that misses.
Tipene not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Tipene looking for a guillotine here but Brown defends easily.

Brown wants to pass the guard but Tipene is keeping the position.
Brown wants to control from the top but Tipene keeps moving.
Brown has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Horrible takedown by Tipene or perhaps it was just good defense by Brown which made him look bad.
Nice sprawl there from Brown as Tipene shoots in.
Matt Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Patariki Tipene.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Brown stops a takedown attempt from Tipene.
Tipene stops a takedown attempt from Brown.
Tipene fails to pull guard.

Brown breaks the clinch.
Brown fails in his attempt to clinch.

Brown moves into range and clinches up with Tipene.
Brown is struggling to control the position.
Tipene gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Brown.
Brown jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Tipene walks away with a smile on his face. Brown gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Brown shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Tipene but Tipene pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Tipene swats away the attempt to clinch by Brown.

Brown forces Tipene back against the cage and clinches.
Tipene wants a takedown.
Brown gets underhooks to prevent Tipene's takedown attempt.
Brown lands an elbow inside.

Brown escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Brown just misses with a punch to the body.
Brown tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Tipene paws at him with a jab and circles away.

and Brown counters by clinching up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Brown pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Tipene misses with a takedown attempt

and Brown counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Brown tightens his grip and picks Tipene up, before dumping him to the ground. Tipene manages to land in guard.
Tipene trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Tipene had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Brown defends it easily.
Tipene thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brown trying to stand up but can't free himself from Tipene's guard.

Tipene is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Brown dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Brown tries to clinch up but Tipene circles away and keeps his distance.
Tipene circles away from the clinch attempt.

Tipene shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Tipene showed some decent athleticism there.
Tipene is pressing down on Brown's thigh, looking to free his foot. Brown is holding on for now.
Brown is pressing down on Tipene's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Brown tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Brown keeping moving, preventing Tipene from controlling successfully.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Tipene wants to control from the top but Brown keeps moving.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Tipene swats away the attempt to clinch by Brown.

Tipene gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Brown breaks the clinch.
Brown misses with a few strikes there.

Tipene changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Brown looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Tipene gets to mount! Brown was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.

Brown tries to reverse the position but Tipene maintains control.
Brown is working hard here to advance position.
Tipene takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Brown really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Patariki Tipene showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Tipene throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Brown's waist but Brown gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Tipene off to one side.

and Tipene counters with a single leg into guard. Brown didn't expect that.
Tipene wants to pass the guard but Brown is keeping the position.
Brown has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Tipene has passed into side control.
Brown is trying to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Brown can't do much from the bottom here.
Brown tries to improve position but can't.
Brown is looking to get back to his feet here but Tipene is keeping cool and he's managed to take Brown's back.
Tipene is trying to stick to Brown's back but Brown is turning into Tipene. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Tipene's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Brown.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Brown trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Tipene escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Brown gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Brown passes Tipene's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Brown tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Tipene is trying to stand up here but Brown is controlling him well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tipene trying to hold on to Brown's head to control him but Brown postures up.
Brown wants to stand up but Tipene has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Tipene pushes Brown off looking to stand but Brown dives back in and keeps control.
Brown wants to free his trapped foot but Tipene is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Tipene moves into the clinch.
Tipene is working for takedown but Brown is calmly controlling the position for now.

Brown has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Tipene regains guard immediately.
Brown throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Brown throwing strikes but missing.
Brown trying to control the position from guard on top but Tipene is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Tipene is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Tipene trying to keep a closed guard but Brown is proving a slippery customer.

And that's the end of the fight!
Patariki Tipene comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Tipene has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
