Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Veijo Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Steve Telus! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Arvi Lind and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Telus takes a swing at Gracie's ribcage but misses. A left lands for Telus. Telus throws a lazy right hand but Gracie sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Telus throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Telus should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Telus throws out a loose jab but Gracie uses good head movement to avoid it. Gracie slips under a jab. Telus fails to land with a series of punches.
Telus misses with a body shot.
Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Telus's waist but Telus gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side. Telus cracks a nice hook into Gracie's ribs. Steve Telus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Telus looks to land a right hand but Gracie moved out of range. Telus misses with a hook. Telus swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gracie steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Telus. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Telus works Gracie's body with a nice hook. Gracie looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Telus is fending him off so far but Gracie persists. Nope, Telus circles away and we're back to standing. Gracie slips a straight right by Telus. Gracie has a takedown stuffed. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Veijo Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gracie tries for a takedown but Telus sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. A big left from Telus misses. Telus throws a jab when Gracie was well out of range. No luck with that takedown attempt from Gracie. Telus connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Gracie keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Telus misses with an uppercut. Telus is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent. Telus's corner calls for a 1-2. Telus obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. The fighters circling - Telus throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Gracie ducks under a wild hook from Telus. Telus misses with an uppercut. Gracie saw that one coming. Gracie looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown but Telus shows good takedown defense. Telus throws a lazy right hand but Gracie sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Gracie ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Gracie fails to land the takedown. Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Gracie showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Telus.
Gracie shoots in looking for a takedown. Telus tries to sprawl out of it but Gracie keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Telus manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Telus throws a right and a left that Gracie avoids nicely. Telus misses with a looping right. Gracie walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Telus throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Telus looks gassed! Telus throws a hook but Gracie avoids it easily. No luck for Gracie with that takedown attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Telus misses with a straight left. Gracie fails to land the takedown. Telus is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Gracie. Gracie needs to keep his hands up - Telus had a free shot at his head there. Gracie moves out of range of the strikes. Telus defending well as Gracie loads up on a big left hand. Telus misses with a series of wild punches.
Gracie slips a jab from Telus. Telus fails to land with a series of punches.
Telus punishes Gracie's body with a nice straight punch. Gracie scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Telus wants to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie thows a huge punch but Telus dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gracie throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Gracie missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Gracie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Telus tries to kick Gracie off but Gracie keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Gracie is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Gracie seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Telus is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
