The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thornton connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Thornton fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Pennanen looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Pennanen thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Pennanen throwing strikes but missing. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pennanen tries to free his leg and advance position but Thornton is retaining full guard. Thornton keeping moving, preventing Pennanen from controlling successfully. Pennanen drops back looking for a leg! Thornton is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Thornton manages to kick Pennanen off! Pennanen jumps back into Thornton's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Thornton scores with a jab. Pennanen acknowledges it with a nod of the head. Thornton throws a body punch but Pennanen moves out of range. Thornton scores with a three punch combo!
Thornton rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pennanen moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Thornton keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Pennanen ducks under a wild hook from Thornton. Thornton throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pennanen closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Pennanen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Thornton, who protects the arm well. Thornton pushes Pennanen away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Pennanen gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Thornton is breathing heavily. Pennanen tries for a kimura but Thornton is defending well. Pennanen is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Thornton looks calm but he's in trouble here. Pennanen gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Thornton is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Pennanen lets go of the hold and Thornton can pop his arm back in it's socket.
