Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gerardo Mejia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dominic Dagenais! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Dagenais tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Dagenais fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Dagenais tries to close the distance and clinch but Mejia swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Mejia throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Dagenais. Mejia fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Dagenais manages to avoid it. Mejia throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Dagenais on the side of the head.
It looks like Dominic Dagenais has been cut. Mejia scores with a punch to the head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Dagenais tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Nice body punch from Mejia. Dagenais looks gassed! Mejia cracks Dagenais with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Dagenais looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Mejia finish him?
Mejia misses with a head kick.
Mejia rushes Dagenais and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Mejia breaks from the clinch.
Mejia shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Dagenais manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Mejia wants to get up but he can't break Dagenais's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Mejia is stalling in the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dagenais has a closed guard, preventing Mejia from standing up. Mejia loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Mejia working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Mejia is looking to stand up but Dagenais won't let him. Mejia throws a big right hand that misses. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mejia trying to control but Dagenais is working from the bottom.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Mejia gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Mejia breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Dagenais looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
That has opened up Dominic Dagenais's cut even more.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mejia lands a left and a right that send Dagenais crashing to the mat, dazed. Mejia thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
The cut above Dominic Dagenais's eye is starting to cause him problems now. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Mejia moves into the clinch successfully.
Mejia manages to break the clinch.

Mejia breaks from the clinch.
Mejia pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Mejia lands a jab-cross combination.
Dominic Dagenais's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters. Mejia tries to land a front kick but Dagenais steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Mejia throws a head kick but Dagenais moves out of range.
Mejia wants to clinch up but Dagenais keeps it at a distance. Dagenais with a lazy takedown attempt and Mejia counters by clinching up. Dagenais jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mejia walks away with a smile on his face. Dagenais gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Gerardo Mejia has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dominic Dagenais. Dagenais fails with a takedown attempt. Dagenais misses with a takedown and Mejia counters with a takedown into side control. Mejia wants to stand but Dagenais has his arm trapped.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mejia prevents Dagenais from escaping the position. Dagenais dodges the ground and pound from Mejia. Dagenais sneaks back into half guard. Dagenais tries to get to full guard but Mejia has control of the leg. Dagenais is trying to control but can't.
Mejia is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Dagenais tries to kick Mejia off but Mejia keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Mejia looks for a takedown but Dagenais sprawls well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. A nice combination there by Mejia.
Mejia fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dagenais sprawls well initially but Mejia persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Mejia is keen to just control but Dagenais is a slippery customer. Dagenais wants to control but Mejia is keeping busy and won't allow it. Dagenais is not content to let Mejia control the position. Dagenais trying to hold on to Mejia's head to control him but Mejia postures up.
It looks like Mejia is going to stand back up.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gerardo Mejia dominated that round. The cut man is working on Dominic Dagenais's cut. That's time! Back to the action!
Dagenais avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mejia closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mejia tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Dagenais defending against the ground and pound. Mejia tries to stand but Dagenais is controlling his head. Dagenais sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Dagenais is trying to maintain the position but Mejia is very close to passing his half guard. Dagenais is refusing to be controlled, as Mejia sits in half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mejia is looking to advance position but Dagenais won't allow it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Dagenais shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Mejia is trying to defend but Dagenais finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Dagenais trying to control from half guard but Mejia is working away. Mejia pushes Dagenais off looking to stand but Dagenais dives back in and keeps control.
Dagenais is trying to control the action in half guard but Mejia is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Dagenais has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Dagenais lands a nice shot to the head. Dagenais is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Dagenais!
